I have naturally light black hair and have been getting it highlighted for years. The past couple of times, we added blond highlights which I really liked. Last week, I went for a touch-up, but the coverage came out way too much. My stylist had a problem with the bleach taking, so she had applied it again - it came out too light and way too heavy.

I called the stylist twice but didn't get a return call. I was getting to the point of really hating it! So I went to the drugstore and bought over-the-counter Revlon colorstay in Medium brown and brushed that color in between the blond areas. It came out really nice...if it would stay this way. After shampoos, will the bleached highlights eventually show through the Revlon color? The box said 'permanent' but I was wondering if it eventually fades or washes out.

You'll be able to tell, but it won't be horribly noticeable.
You can still see my highlights through my blonde hair. (Natural blonde -> highlights -> dye).
But I actually think it looks nicer that way, it's not just one solid colour :)

All hair dye fades. I bleached my hair with the strongest stuff they have and it faded in about a month. My hair is bad about that.

It depends on the condition of your hair and the type of dye used. You picked up a permanent dye, which will stick longer, but bleaching hair is extremely harsh and without seeing the condition if it, it's hard to say whether it'll fade soon or not.

Bleaching dries out the hair shaft and opens up the pores. When the pores are big and open, color tends to have a bit of problem staying. If you can get your hands on a good quality conditioner, definitely do so to make sure your hair stays happy and healthy. :) I really prefer Frederic Fekkai Protein Rx, but it's costly....$32 for a small jar. The jar lasts forever though if you use small amounts a few times a week.

My hair, because I've dyed the crap out of it...lol...tends to fade quicker than I'd prefer. Like, I just dyed it black and hot pink 2 or 3 weeks ago and it's already faded quite a bit. But hair that's in better condition will hold better.

LOL I thought I was being daring with blond highlights! Thanks luvs2show and 11-11 for the replies. My hair is in pretty good condition. The highlighting over the years has just been on the top section and I usually don't blow dry or use an iron on 'regular' days.

My daughter is a cosmetologist and works next door so I had her read the thread up to here and she says:

"It will fade out to a lighter brown where there is blonde underneath eventually, but not completely back to blonde. Get a salon quality color treated shampoo and conditioner will help hold off the fading. Biolage is a good brand or Paul Mitchell. But make sure you buy the type that is for color treated hair."

Good luck, hope this helps.
