Gizmo...

Why Gizmo you ask? Well, as you have seen he is really cute. Just got that sweet little baby face. But if your not careful he'll grab you like a evil little gremlin.

So we have settled on Gizmo. He will be moved to our friends place soon and there he will be gelded. Thankfully he has dropped both *jewels* and won't need to under go more of a surgury then needed.

I have been working with him alot on his manners. I have made some head way with using the water bottle/treat advice 3 equines gave me. I also contact FancyMules from horse.com for advice and she has given me a novel of great things to know and be prepared for with his gelding. Like how if te vet doesn't tie him off right then donkey can bleed out. Which is GREAT to know so I can make sure the vet knows too!

I got so spoiled by Hope wonderful personality and demeanor, I just have a feeling that when this little guy grows up with the proper love and training he'll be wonderful too!

LOL - yes, fancy mules has lots of info. However my vet politely pointed out that he has done plenty of donkeys before.

Good luck on the gelding procedure. Shouldn't be too bad - my boy was 6 years old when he had his done and it went pretty smooth. He did swell up more than the horses, but the vet said he would be fine and he was.

Love the name!

I am happy he is no longer 'Loco"! The behavior will get better over time. My first rescue donkey, Brew, was gelded but hadn't been handled much. He would go after me when I was in his pasture (head down, ears pinned) and try to bite a lot when being handled. Somehow we established respect, and from there loyalty developed. Now he is being handled and ridden (yes, ridden!) by a 7-year-old girl. I think it took about 3 months to really establish the respect and boundaries (when I didn't need to ask for respect anymore, just got it no matter what).
I had Brew for a couple of years before he went to live with his new family. It was so hard to let him go. But Brew wasn't getting used once I had my Haflinger mare (it was very hard for him to keep up with my Arab, and hard on my Arab to slow down enough for Brew), and I was starting full-time college (= no money!). I am just very glad that he has the perfect home, and I still visit from time to time.
