I just want to get a reaction. If I say "Pro Meris" what do you have to say? Has anyone had experience with it?

Never heard about it until now.
Searched it out, and all I have to say is WOW, no way thats getting on my animal or me.
Here is a snopes link.

Finding all kinds of negative stuff on this. Story I found.

I would like to advise you of the problem I had last week with the
new ProMeriS Flea and Tick treatment, put out by Fort Dodge.
I am sharing this story, with the hope of saving someone else's beloved pet.
I stopped by my Vet to purchase Frontline for Fleas and Ticks, as I
had began to notice a few on my 2 Great Pyr dogs, since the warmer
weather has arrived. She suggested a new product, that she thought I
should try, so I agreed. The next day I applied the treatment to both my
dogs, and almost immediately, one began to act kind of strange. Later
that evening, she became desperately ill. Her entire body was jerking all over and she was breathing rapidly. She was also having some gastric distress, like she had eaten something that had made her ill, or at worst had possibly been poisioned. Then I remembered applying the ProMeris, earlier, and her acting odd. When I called my Vet, she knew immediately what it was and by the
time I got there, she had called Fort Dodge, and they had agreed to pay
the Vet's bills. An IV was started ASAP, and I was told that there
was an antedote for ProMeris. It had apparently attacked her nervous
system, and it could not be reversed. She died the next
day.........they had her shipped immediately to a facility for a complete necropsy. I
asked my Vet why, and was told that they needed it done for their
"research". Could this product still be in the testing stage??? I am so
angry, and so hurt over this, and I can never replace my sweet girl. I
suppose that I am fortunate that my other female, didn't have the same
reaction, and appears to be okay.

Sounds like a severe allergic reaction to the product. This can happen with anything your animals come into contact with. Promeris has been used in thousands of animals safely...it's when you have the one that does react that you hear about it.

But just like any new product that you are going to use in your animal, you should read the label carefully and know what the signs of an adverse reaction are and then watch your animal carefully after dosing to see how they respond to the product. This is because you never know if you are going to have one of the reactors until it happens.

The unfourtunate thing is that reactions can happen to anyone from anything. I had an allergic reaction once where my throat started to swell(but didnt get far) and I was covered in hives(everywhere) for 2 days, and we dont know what it was from.
However, if it is common that animals have reactions to this there needs to be some type of prominant warning on the box.

Thanks everyone.

Ryle,

The vet put Rudy on ProMeris because of a type of genetic mange (sp) he has. He explained it as little mites in the hair follicle that causes hair loss. The ProMeris has an ingredient in it that kills the mites. He says all dogs have these mites, but Rudy's ammune system doesn't recognize them as intruders and they continue to grow in numbers.

The product has worked very well to stem the hair loss, he looks like a normal Golden Retriever, but when I apply it he is really out of it for about 2 days. Lethargic and lazy. He doesn't get sick as in vomiting or diahrea just doesn't feel very well. Should I be concerned? He is fine after a couple of days. The vet said it shouldn't effect him as much as he gains weight. He was at the lower end of the dosage (50 pounds) in the beginning. He is somewhere in the 70+ pound range now and it still effects him.

The problem with allergies, is that they tend to get worse with time and exposure so it's definitely something to keep an eye on. If he's still gaining weight then the problem may become less pronounced as his weight gets greater in comparison to the steady dose of the drug that he's getting.

So does your vet want him on this for life just for Demodectic mange? This type of manges tends to be a come-n-go sort of problem. You can treat it and get the number of mites under control and then not see any problems until some sort of stressful event---surgery, illness, moving homes, etc--occurs, so it may be that you don't have to keep him on Promeris forever.

I have to agree with Ryle on that. My Collie has Demodectic mange. She had a reaction once, moving, shots, worm issues, and she was new to us. Took a couple months of special baths, she has never had a reaction again. Hope she never gets one again, poor girl. I dont treat her for it anymore.

Well that's encourageing. I thought he would have to be on it for life. I promised him I wouldn't do it to him next month. His hair is beautiful now. He had a few small bald spots and some thin areas when a puppy. He seems to be fine now, but I was attributing it to the monthly treatments. I think I will leave him off of it for a while and see what happens.

You could also try a "preventic collar" to help keep Demodectic mange at bay.

We've had 2 bad reactions to Promeris at the clinic and I am "generally" distrustful of Fort Dodges practices. They make a few good products, but their general M.O. seems to be release drugs willy nilly and see what happens and recall them if they are no good. (I know this isn't how it actually works but sometimes it gets to feeling like that! )

Yeah, some of the things I've read about Fort Dodge seems that way. I will get a Preventic collar" and see if that helps.

Thanks for everyone's replies. :)
