View Full Version : Frustrated! I hate parasites!

I just found this nasty worms in Triggers poop.
Any idea what they are?
I just wormed them with Ivermectin a week ago. They were wormed with Zimetricin gold at the beginning of April and Quest in March.
Really I'm just wondering why. No need to advice me to go to the vet; I will see him tomorrow.
I'm sure he will help. If it wasn't Sunday I'd be on my way. Maybe he should consider being open 24/7 I would really like that! :D
I'm frustrated with the parasites. I knew my horses were all full of them when I got them. But I'd think after all those wormers I gave them it should be under control now!

Were they alive when they came out? How fresh is this? They might be the dead ones from your wormer a week ago.

Oh and I think it's a strongyle. Roundworm.

Yes they were alive!
I have wormed them for strongyles a month ago. If they are strongyles he shouldn't have this many! I have found several in that pile.
I know for sure they weren't there before. He was stalled; I have cleaned it daily. It's easy to see them; they are big!
If they were something else I could understand - Ivermectin doesn't kill the parasites just paralyzes them. (It isn't suposed to work on strongyles though, does it?) Maybe the dose of Ivermectin in Zimetricin wasn't strong enough to get rid of them and the second Ivermectin did the trick.
I wasn't even planning on the last Ivermectin worming yet, because I gave them Zimetricin only couple of weeks before the last worming.

I still didn't manage to get rid of all the lice. Seems like Sydney and Trigger are OK, but Crystal still has some and Bullet has a lot in her mane and neck. Vet told me to give them another dose so last week they got Ivermectin.
When I was brushing them yesterday I still found lice.
So I went to Wall Mart and got RID shampoo for people. I KNOW that thing works. It's expensive, but I HATE parasites!!! This will kill them, for sure.
I just need to wait for a rain free day now. It's supposed to rain whole week.

I know about the ick factor.

My kitten barfed up a stomach full of round worms once and I thought I was going to crawl out of my skin.

Gak.

Use Quest for strongyles. It's the best for those.

Just don't overdose them, Quest is a stronger drug than the others you can get away with overdosing, and you want to be as close as you can on weight. None of your guys are very big, you can probably do two per tube.

I have given them Quest exactly a month ago. Isn't it too soon?

Oh - I see that.

I dunno... you have thrown a lot at them lately, lets see if Ryle or someone comes on with any cautions about doing it again...

You can also ask the vet of course.

Yeah, I'm planning to get a sample to the vet tomorrow and talk to him. I have to go there anyways, because I'm just about out of the spray to treat Trigger's wound.

Thanks though. :)

It's not a strongyle. And from the angle of the photo it's really hard to tell, but it looks like the tail gets very thin and comes off the body at a slight angle. So it's probably a pinworm and they are probably being expelled because of the ivermectin. I wouldn't just go and redose--no need to any sooner than 8 weeks after using ivermectin (at the very soonest). Pinworms are a nuisance, but not a big health threat.

How old is this horse? You say you found them in the stall--does the horse have ANY turnout time on pasture? Truthfully, it sounds like you are deworming way too often.

Ryle, the horse was in the stall only for few days after his injury. He is out on the pasture with other 4 horses. I wouldn't have wormed them so often if it weren’t for the lice. The quest they got in March was given at right time. The Zimetricin I gave sooner than planed because they got lice and it has Ivermecting in it. They needed to be wormed for a tapeworm anyways because the two girls were not wormed for tapeworm before. Trigger and Sydney were due too.
The last Ivermectin was given because the lice didn't go away after giving them Zimetricin. I went to talk to wet and did as he told me.
Don't worry I am not planning to worm them again without talking to vet first. I'm going to show him what I found tomorrow and discuss everything with him. I was just wondering what those are - it surprised me after all those wormers. Would have gone to the vet today to ask if it wasn't Sunday.

I have had good luck with seven dust for lice. You just make a stripe down the middle of there back with it. I rescued a pony that was infested with lice and I now don't see any crawling but will treat again later just to be safe. I also found a fly spray that kills lice and nits. Its called Zonk It. I am spraying it on my other horses to prevent them getting lice even though the little guy is penned up away from them.

Hope you get the parasites under control.

For treating lice, it sounds like you are going too long between dosing with ivermectin/moxidectin. Treating lice requires treating every 10 days for 3 successive treatments to break the life cycle. So if you are waiting a month in between treatments you are allowing the lice to hatch and reproduce before you dose again.

Thanks Ryle.
I didn't know I'm supposed to treat them 3 times.
I gave Zimetricin beginning of April - that has Ivermectin in it.
2 weeks later I gave just Ivermectin.
It has been 10 days since - so I could give them another dose tomorrow.

Gliderider, thanks for the advice. I'm not very comfortable with Sevin Dust. I know that thing works great - I used it when my dogs brought flees to my house and I was getting bitten. However I'm not sure how safe it is for use on horses - I see them lick and nibble on each other's necks. Wouldn't want to poison them.
