View Full Version : Weird quirks about your horse?

I got the idea for this thread because of Jack, who is probably the 'strangest' horse I've ever met :p. The other day I was filling up the water buckets outside and all three of the horses were eating hay not far from me. It was quite hot outside so I flicked the hose at them. Atlas and Rosie wandered off warily and Jack just stood there staring at me and getting sprayed, he's so funny.
Anyway the newest quirk he has is that he takes one of the water buckets (I have two big ones in their paddock) and once it is drained he picks it up in his mouth. He waves it at the other horses (scaring them) and at some point flings it over the fence. So every morning I have to scan the fence line looking for the bucket .
What are your horse's quirks?

Lyric yawns.
And yawns.
And yawns.
And yawns.
It makes me yawn just thinking about it.

Rebel's mane is ticklish. When I'm putting his bridle on and have the halter or reins over his neck, he incessently shakes his head. When I'm grooming and brush his mane, he shakes his head. He's getting over it a bit...used to be really bad when I first got him. But I've been working with him on it. :)

cisco (he's 8 months old) has to be led to and from the barn first or he throws a fit (he's getting better though) he loves treats but has no clue what to do with an apple.
poncho loves to lick people and when he pee's in his stall he has to go right at the door so he has to walk through and so do we.
midnite tries to attack the hose whenever we fill up the water buckets (she bites and pulls).

Wow where to start lol.
Niko likes to yawn when things are "boring" or he's hungry and stick his tongue out.
He nickers constantly, when I get on he nickers, when I pat him he nickers, when I get off he nickers, when I lead him he nickers... lol
He likes to move move his water trough around... with water still in it. He doesn't spill it but some how he can move it and I go out and have to try to move it back but its usually to heavy.

Very cute quirks everyone, thanks for sharing :p. Good to know other horses have a strange interest with water buckets.
FSA, love those pics! Haha

FSA, what are you doing to that boy!!! He's exhausted!!! Lol. Cute photo lineup!!
Sterling won't let other people touch her face. She loves people but wants them to touch her neck. . .but she loves having her face rubbed by me. . . when we are at rodeos an she has a crowd around her she will back up each time someone touches her face. . not in a bad way just in a "I'm sorta annoyed at this" way.
Sonora loves to stick her nose in people's chests and rest her head.
Sunny kicks trees. Over and over and over again. She's got bruises all over her back hooves from it. And she actually sits there and hold her feet up cause it hurts, but she'll kick again. . .
Mack smiles for treats, and when he paws, he NEVER makes contact with the ground. He just holds his hoof in the air and shakes it. . kinda cute!

When I go out to feed. City picks up his feeder(40gal bucket)and if I ask, he will do it again.
Myst is pretty quirky proof, but she does like a wet feed, with lots of water, and will slop it up until its gone.

Gypsy is my "killer pony"...no really. She likes to try to drown cats, she'll carry cats around by their tails, she'll go stomp stomp stomp towards them, more than once she's killed impressive Black Rat snakes(i'm talking over 5 feet long ones) and played with them, she tries to stomp on wild turkeys out on our rides....if it looks stompable in her eyes...she'll try to stomp it!
Sadie...oh my. She is my embarassing pony. We can go whole rides, if no one is around, of her not passing manure or urinating...or when she does, it just happens. BUT...if someone is watching...she'll stop and make a BIG production of it...she'll groan and grunt...pass the manure...then SIIIIIIGH...groan and grunt some more and go right back to work.
She also has this thing when I feed her...and only when it is me feeding her. My friend who had her up in MI said she never did it once the couple-few years she was up there. So I assumed she was over it....went to feed her and nope. She drools. She sees me coming with the feed bucket and drool starts POURING out of her mouth. We both fed her the same "hard" feed...and I sent up 30 bales of hay when she left OH...and when she came back I had several bales of hay brought down from there to switch her over with...and it started right then and there as soon as I fed her the next day. She is kept on a dry lot....so we figure I'm the trigger for drooling...LOL

Biggs likes to hug me back when I hug him. It's really cute :) He also stretches like a dog with his front feet out EVERY morning right when I drive up and park in front of his stall...never fails.

Chrissy has little ledges in her stall, and she likes to go to the bathroom on them...
Andd, whenever she has straw in her stall instead of shaving, she always eats all of the straw, and has no bedding left.

Here I go...
When I cleaned stalls at a barn there was a little Fjord mare. In the winter when we turned them out she would go directly to the frozen water tank and put both front feet up on it and STOMP-STOMP-STOMP! Until the ice broke up for everyone to drink. It would be -30 and there she would be with both front feet in the tank.
My old mare Sombra (translates shadow hense shewasmyshadow) would hike her butt up over the water bucket and poop in it. We had to move the bucket. Apparently it was in the poop corner. Mares!! :D
I brought my mini home in our car. That was quirky! She was just a little weanling. Fit perfectly. However, even when she was older she still didn't have a fear of anything. We'd go in the garage and she'd step through the garden rakes/shovels just like she did it everyday. We even tried to sneak in the house one time, but got caught. Darn!
Rashad...my first horse, my gentleman. The only quirk I can think of is kind of a good thing. He LOVES to trail ride BY HIMSELF! He doesn't like to go with other horses. He would prefer to go alone. Which is fine because no one can keep up with him anyways, but it is weird. I don't know any other horses that are like that. I remember trail riding with my 4-H club. We'd all be going along and the trail would branch off. Even when all the others went one way he would try to go the other way. Weirdo.

Lets see... Koda will try every trick in the book with an adult on him but put a kid on him (or a kid up in front of me) and his head drops and he just pokes along, even with the kid screaming in his ear! When you give him an apple he will bite down just enough to break the skin and then will suck the juice out. Then bite down again and suck the juice and will do that till the apple is falling apart then eat the apple! We thought he might have a problem with his teeth but he will eat hard ol carrots and grain just fine, guess he just likes the apple juice.

Buster snuffles all around me looking for a treat. He won't touch me with his teeth, but he wiggles his lips back and forth and roots all around in my pockets and stuff looking for a treat if I let him. :)

SS did that the other morning and I thought he looked like a dog  hahaaa
Any case if I am out raking , he likes to come over and grab the end of the handle and acts like he wants to rake , but I think he is tasting the salt from palm sweat:nono:

Muffin will play with anything, try to get anything in his mouth and won't leave stuff alone. He's like a kid in a candy store and wants to open every bin and ask every question possible about each candy. He's just like a kid mentally but it's funny, annoying but funny.
He also has a thing for big horses. At the stables normal sized or small horses can walk by and he doesn't pay attention but if a big horse like a draft of draft cross comes by he is so happy and wants to play. He almost acts like the smaller horses are kinda scary but the ones bigger then him are his long lost Buddy's.
He also loves the hose. You can't give him a bath with out at some point giving him the hose end. He has to have it in his mouth holding on to it with the water running. It calms him right down and he's happy holding it, sprayer or not he has to hold it in his mouth.
He's pretty much a big goof that has no idea how big he is. lol
Miracle Whip

Whip will whack Ginger with the rubber feed tub if he doesn't think she is paying enough attention to him. Its part of their "tag you are it" game. So I can't use rubber tubs.
Had him in a stall a while back, the water bucket was FULL, next morning it was on the floor of the stall....
Ginger used to chew on the strings to my hood if I rubbed her cheeks.
Whip plays in his water, puts his feet in the water trough when it is hot.

Red sweats when he is excited (good or bad excited; no difference). A LOT! When, I first got him, we had to do a lot of ground work (very pushy and in your space). My arm holding the lead rope would be dripping with his sweat. It gets better with time. He had finally chilled out when we moved and started all over again. People freak out when they see it for the first time. I have to make sure that everyone knows this is normal for him, or I get frantic phone calls.
He also paws the air (not the ground) when he first starts eating his grain. Looks like a rockette.

Gypsy likes to eat popple tree leaves, even when she's got plenty of grass- silly horse! She likes lilac bushes, but not as much as her popple trees- sheesh!

Lol love hearing about all the funny habits of your guys' horses.
Iris, Muffin sounds soo much like Jack! He's exactly like that, a really goofy and playful guy. He acts more like a lap dog than a big horse

Let's see... Mark likes to unzip your jacket or vest if it has even a small zipper pull, or he'll zip it up if it's half way down. He also likes to stick his foot in his feeder and paw at his "goodies". I have no clue what he's trying to accomplish with that one! (we use tire feeders, on the ground) If you have a while near by, Mark will pick it up by the handle and "whip" you with it too, lol. Mark likes to hug back and rest his head on your shoulder (or your head if you're short).
Bridgette will follow you around the pasture begging to be scratched. Her favorite spots are on the very top of her rump, or under her belly. She also comes for love before she'll touch her hay. She HAS to have a pet on the head/face first. She nickers when you're getting off, and when I first come out of the house in the morning.

My Sassy love to drink out of the hose like it's a water fountain.
Sasha loves it when hubby rubs her belly. She sticks her neck way out and sticks her nose up in the air. He loves it (Shasha, too).
Faith hates to get rained on. I go out and let her in a stall and she rolls before I can get out. Scares me that she'll hit me with her legs. My present Avatar pic is when it snowed 3/1 this year and she was so miserable looking I let her in the stall. Her face and mane were all wet and tossed about from the snow.
Spec won't eat out of your hand, not even take a cookie. He'll eat it if you put it in his bucket or on the ground. I think somebody was mean to him sometime in his life. Poor thing.

Angel used to hate having her tail brushed. You know how Arabs usually carry their tails up a little all the time? Well, she would always get crap stuck on her tail and when I would go to comb it out, she would flatten her tail against her butt so I couldn't get it. So annoying!
She also would paw the ground a little when she was tied. She usually tied pretty well, but whenever I would walk away, she would pay the ground. It was kind of funny and I almost taught her to shake!
Oh I almost forgot Flash. He loved to have his forelock scratched. You could scratch it all day and he would be in heaven. Whenever I would go see him, he would stick his nose into my chest and put his head down so I could reach his forelock to pet him lol.
