I got banned from the horse auction! Yup you read that right.....that is the reason I am posting this early:innocent: Well I was expecting some thin horses to come in and that was right there were some thin horses that came in but there was also some nice healthy horses that came in. Well there was this cute little miniature colt so very cute that I begged DH to let me get but he said no and he was right my dogs prolly would have tried to eat him but he was SOOOOOOOO cute! Anyways the last horses to come in was 3 paints all at various stages of weight loss. The one that caused me to get kicked out and banned from the auction was a little black and white paint colt. Here's the story:
This colt came in very thin which aggravated me to begin with.....then the owners put a saddle on this little guy I wasn't there to see them put the saddle on or I would have said something then. Well Tara and I went back in to watch the tack sales and got bored after 1 hr. and went back out to see the horses and the colt was pawing and rearing up and bouncing around I went in and calmed the colt down and then my friend that I went with said she found a nice saddle and wanted me to go look at it and give her my opinion okay.....I went back out and there was another guy in with the colt and I was talking to him and asked him some questions and he said the colt was 9 months old......grrrrrr why in the hell is 9 month old THAT thin and have a saddle on!?! Anyways my friend then yelled for me and said her saddle was up and wanted me to come watch....okay okay......She won the saddle and after that I go back to look at the horses and I seen someone riding that COLT!!!!!!! I ran down and yelled some pretty profanity at the lady and she jumped off and I said "why the hell are you on that baby" he reply....."I didn't know; it has a saddle on I thought it was okay" I rolled my eyes at her and went in and took that saddle off which should have never been there to begin with......then the owner came while I was placing the saddle on the gate.......a Hispanic man yelling at me. When people seen what was under that saddle I heard people gasp.......he was just so thin! Anyways the auctioneer came and asked me to leave and to not come back.....fine with me but I did what was right for that baby.

Oh man....I am so glad you tried to help that poor colt! Is there any way the humane society or someone can get involved to investigate that?? That sounds like abuse and neglect. Good for you for taking action, but the auction people have to be pretty smarmy to allow that to ever happen....I would report them.

Way to go! I'm so glad you stood up for him.
Kudos to you!! He definately looks like he should Not be ridden.
Isn't it amazing how stupid people can be?
We went to a livestock sale this past week, they typically have cows, sheep, goats, and chickens/ducks. Well this week they had a horse. AWWWW! I didn't have a way to get her home or I would've took her.
She was 5 1/2 months old. We had loved on her for a good while and I offered her a horse treat that I had in my pocket, but she wouldn't eat it. She was scared to death! They brought her into the ring and she walked around. The had this guy there (who's been there as long as I can remember), trying to see if she was a colt or filly. He saw her belly button lil' lump and said yea it's a colt. Then he's trying to take his whip to lift up her tail to see if she's a colt or filly. Honestly, come on! I heard one of the other guys who work there say, " If he can't tell if it's a colt or filly, he needs help." Yep, he needs help!
It really annoys me! The Colt was indeed a filly and only brought 125.00
She was so sweet and so loving! I just hope she found a good home.
Anyways, great job to you for helping out!!!

Sorry you got banned, but thank you for standing up for that colt. I guess hoping that it gave his owner a wake up call and that she would actually change her ways would be unrealistic.:( But you still did the right thing.
People like that just make me sick.

Not only the owner but the stupid idiot that actually thought that colt could be ridden! I mean...come on....I would not have even attempted to get on that poor thing. 9 months old or 9 yrs old! that saddle was horrendous fitting!
So now you can go to the auction in disquise...get a wig and have a friend register as a bidder. :p

No doubt the saddle was on to hide how thin he was
how awful
sorry you were banned but you did the right thing!
I was thinking the same thing mouse - saddle was on there for hiding purposes. Poor horse, hope he got a good home.

wow ... people never cease to amaze me. Im sure the saddle was on to hide how skinny he was. Sorry to hear you got banned but it was for a good reason. My 9yr paint mare was a skinny black/white sold at auction at 2 very skinny and undersaddle. We now have ongoing stifle issues contributed from poor nutrition and being ridden too young. I sure wish there was a test people had to take before they could own a horse. We recently acquired a 3 month old pinto whose momma was a rescue that was not given enough groceries to sustain herself much less a growing baby so she was weaned early. My daughter(12) has more knowledge on feeding and proper nutrition than some adults.

Your right WB........this problem is everywhere and really when you sit and think about it is always going to happen because there are people that just don't give a 2 cents......people blame the economy but in reality this happened before the economy took a downward turn and will continue after the economy get back to speed....granted it wasn't as great as a problem but not every horse is fat and happy like we all want to believe.
I do not know what happened to the colt after wards........I wish I did.....but I did overhear a young couple with a child talking about a plan to get him back up to weight so I can only hope the couple got him and knows what they are doing.

It makes me sick to think that all these people care abouit is making a buck, and not the welfare of the horse. It's seen far too often. And heaven forbid if you stick your nose '"where it doesn't belong"! They just get rid of you any way they can so they can continue their song and dance!

I just can't go to auctions....I know I'd definitely be escorted from the premises if I went.
Heck, last time I went to an all-Arabian show I had a hard time from blowing up, there were a couple very rough trainers working their horses, it wasn't out and out abuse or else I would have reported them, but it was bad enough that my friends and I had to just get up and leave.......

Auctions are awful and this is what you see all around the country. Horses like that are being dumped by the owners for a variety of reasons. Anyone that I know in the "business" isn't breeding this year because of the poor market, they may not breed next year either. We'll continue to see these poor animals coming through for quite some time.

OH MY GOSH, on top of that colt being way too thin and way too young, the saddle fit is horrendous. I guess I shouldn't have expected it to if they treat the colt the way they do. Gah, thanks for standing up for that poor baby, though!

Good for you!! Way to go! standing up for that colt and yelling at that guy to get off him!! I would contact the animal control and make them hold the auctioneers responsible! They are allowing people to make a buck off animal abuse!!
We have a horse auction here once a month. But, every one knows that they will refuse to auction an unhealthy animal. They can not have ribs showing and have to walk sound or they will be refused. So, at least people keep there horses fed good if they want to sell them at auction. It's grate to see the look on peoples faces when they are told to go get there horse and load him back on to there trailer because they won't run him through action tell they put more weight on him. The look on there faces of shame for not feeding that animal properly and having to escort it out of the auction while everyone is watching them. People don't bring horses that sickly but they do bring them with there ribs showing so it wouldn't take much to pack a few pounds on them for next months auction. It sure wakes people up and makes them realize there horse is not in good condition and no one wants to buy a skinny horse and pay/reward the owner for not feeding him.
I think it's great that they won't let skinny horses be sold at are local auction. The owners have to keep there weight up or eventually get reported by there neighbors for not feeding the horse. They can't just dump him off at an auction and get away with it. Ether step up and feed that animal so you can auction him off or don't feed him and get reported. No dumping and making a buck off abuse!!

...but I did overhear a young couple with a child talking about a plan to get him back up to weight so I can only hope the couple got him and knows what they are doing.
I'm just going to tell myself they did get him and he's getting the care he deserves. :)

At our local livestock auction that I mentioned in my first post, they want the animal to be walking, however, it doesn't matter how good or bad they are walking. As long as it moves they accept it, skinny, fat, whatever. They sadly auction off day old calves. Once I'm finacially able to afford it, I'm going to rescue one and bottle raise it. But as long as the calves can stumble around and walk they auction them off. Some are just a couple hours old. One day we were there a month or two back, and they had one come in who couldn't hold it's head up. They tried to drag it, it wouldn't budge. They ended up putting him back on the truck he came from and sent him back home. There's one thing I have with that though. Odds are those owners wouldn't have took it back home and cared for it. Chances are they put it down (Somehow, not sure I want to know how), or they just let it die on it's on. I wish I could've walked down there said here's 10 bucks let me have it. I'm still living at home so I can't just take whatever animals I want regardless, because my parents own the property, etc. If you see what I mean. My mom was with me that day, and it broke my heart not to be able to help it. If I can get a place of my own I'm going to rescue all I can help out. My parents are very caring, but it does stop at a point, which it kinda has to, or we'd be run out of our 20 acres with animals EVERYWHERE. They had some other calves that came with it, that were able to stumble around but walk still, and since they didn't move quick enough you can only imagine what torture device they used to move them "quicker" (though it didn't). A shocker! They had an electric shocker trying to prod them.
That very same day a goat came in with some others. The others were skinny, but moved. One in particular didn't. It couldn't even lift his head up, and kept having seziures (It appeared from where I was). They put it back in the truck and sent it back home. The sad thing is, his or her fate will probably end up the same as the calf above. I wanted so bad to go down there(we were up on a balcony). I've raised goats for almost 8 yrs. now, and it looked to me like he/she was severly infested with worms, and had polio. Even if I would've got him/her, it may have been to late to do anything, but I could've atleast gave it a fighting chance and helped it have a few last comfortable hours. If it did pull through, then obviously that'd be great! But if not, it could be as comfy as possible.
It's a shame there's so many out there that just don't care!
I have a saying I like using:
"It's not that I'm not a people person, it's that I'm not a stupid people person." Kinda sums it up!
I'm still grateful you took that saddle off and gave him a chance to have it off and not be ridden. You were an angel to him and he'll always be grateful to you I'm sure!!!

Well a big  to you for your helping him. Poor fellow. That kind of stuff drives me nutts.
Thats disgusting that anyone would even considering riding that skinny little colt, do you know what happened to him?

10-20-2008, 11:48 AM
Oh wow.... I can't believe that. He must've been either a very quiet baby or drugged(Or too weak to fight) for them to get a saddle AND a person on him at that age. So sad.
Good for YOU for saying something. Too many people "turn a blind eye" and figure they can't do anything. Who knows who was standing around who agreed with you and after you were evacuated, said something to the owners/auctioneer.
