Sorry for all the posts about Flash lately; I'm really missing him.

Do you guys all know the basic story about me and Flash? If not, the jist of it is, Flash was my first horse and he was blind. I couldn't ride him without another horse to ride ahead of him and I had no one to ride with so I gave him up for a sighted horse that I could ride (Angel).

I'm starting to wonder if I did the right thing. I'm sure you guys have had your special horse, the one that is always glad to see you, will do anything for you. Flash and I had the strongest bond ever, and I don't know if giving him up was the right thing to do or not. His new owner Sara says I'm welcome to come visit him any time, but they live so far away I can't go whenever I feel like it (which is every day). I haven't visited him in over two years, and that feels like a lifetime. Sara emails me alot and tells me how wonderful he is, that he's found a forever home. I'm so glad that he's found a good home, but someday I was going to ask her if she would ever consider selling him back to me. I guess not. That probably sounds selfish, but I am when it comes to my baby boy!

Do you think I did the right thing? He is probably happier there, but I miss him so much.

As much as it hurts YOU, what you need to do as an owner and caretaker is do what is best for the horse. He can no longer take care of himself, and if your home is no longer optimal, then - even though it might break your heart - it would be best to put him in a home where he can live out a long, happy life. I hope that doesn't sound horrible, and i certainly hope it makes sense. It's what Brig's previous owners did; he needed to be ridden, they couldn't do that any longer, so they gave him to me.

I don't think there's any harm in letting her know that if he becomes a hardship for her, or she'd like to sell him in the future, that you want to be given a chance to buy him.

I had that offer on Bay, the first time he came up for sale, I was not ready to buy... he went to an acquaintance. But I kept track of him, and when he came available again, I was ready.

I think you did the right thing. You ended up not being able to afford Angel, right? So if it were Flash in that situation the BO would've taken him and you wouldn't have been able to find him this new special home. (or maybe I'm wrong, I may be forgetting the details :D) I think it's perfectly fine to offer to take him if she ever decides to sell. Just be happy that he has someone to love him the way you did. :)
