This is Brutus Beefcake! Back in February I posted about his Mom being found abandoned on an old country road - extremely thin and pregnant during our cold snap. My friend Robby adopted him and was told "he is probably a Lab/Whippet mix and there might be some Boxer in there". I thought he looked part Pit back then and I think so even more now but because Robby will soon be looking for an apartment - I almost hope he's not.
Brutus stayed the night with me last night and he's very different from any dog I've ever had. His tail is set very low, his rear end is very roundish, his ears are "gremlin like", his paws are very "cat like" in the shape of his "claws" and how he uses them, he isn't very vocal barking wise yet whines a lot, and he likes to stand a lot and use those paws - perhaps a Boxer thing? I wish I'd gotten a pic of him standing but here's what I did get - what do you all think?

I think he could be part Pitt or Boxer. He's a cute boy though.

Yes - he is a cutie! I worry with the family issues Robby is having that Brutus might end up looking for a new home. He is five months old and looks to have quite a bit of growing still to do - if he is to catch up to those big feet and not be so gangly and clutzy. He has ZERO manners... doesn't even sit!

Aw geeze - who knows!
Might be boxer... the brindle color is common enough with them too, as well as in pits. And there's probably Labrador somewhere in any indiscriminate breeding program ;) He's got a bit of growing to do yet, I agree, he's real big-boned in the legs for that relatively little body.

Here's his Momma.

OK - She looks Lab/Whippet/Whoknows... and that's where the brindle came from.
That other pup there looks like a Bernese Mountain Dog or a Rottie...
I think this was quite the eclectic breeding program :D Very ah.... diverse :D

The ears, low set tail and round butt, odd paws is very much a trait of whippets and greyhounds. His face does have lab in but could pit/lab/greyhound

But now I see Mom and I don't know what.. :D

Lab/pit most deffinitley!!!!
Myhorsebud's dog Nadia looks just like that, but she has more of the lab face
But the ears, the coloring looks very very similar

i'm gonna go a different route---Catahoula Leopard Dog (Mountain Cur, Catahoula Cur) cross.
and they come in brindle as well...I used to have a dark brindle one..

Does sort of resemble a Lab/Pit cross. I don't see any Boxer features tho, they have the more "smashed in" face look.....lol.....friend of mine has a Boxer. His face looks more Lab-like....he sure is cute!!

You know they can DNA test your pooch to find out what he is? Most vets offer the service now, or you can order a test kit and mail it off..

Well... I kind of want to say possibly a Dane mix, but seeing his mother, maybe not. From the picture of her, I could see some sighthound, particularly in that hind end. I could definitely see some Catahoula in there, if they do come in brindle (didn't know that!). I don't really see pit, but I'd have said Lab/Dane (with 11 special herbs and spices aka something else) without seeing Mama. The various Cur "breeds" that are out there could be another possibility, they come in a variety of colors and apperances as far as I understand.
Whatever he is, he's quite handsome.
ETA: Spotsmom, those tests don't cover all breeds and aren't very accurate for their cost. For fun? Sure, do it. For serious inquiry? Forget it.

ironically...people often mistook my Catahoula for a Lab/Pit cross...
I'd love to own another some day...she was a great dog

Hm, I see pit bull, they have very cat like paws. It's creepy. He doesn't look very square like a boxer, he looks more wedged like a pit bull.

There are lots of other breeds that have cat like feet. It's a trait in a lot of hounds, which is definitely what his mother looks more like.

I'll give you my opinion....being a pitbull owner for 6 years. I'd say your little guy has some Pit in him.............. don't know how much. But the 2nd pic of him laying his head on the floor, I can see the jawline and to me that screams Pit. His coat is TOO thick to have more Pit than the other breed. Pits are single coated unlike Labs, Golden's, etc who are double coated. His mother is very narrow.....who knows.

I was mauled the other day by a Pit myself!!!! I was walking from work to my boyfriends house to get my car...about 2 blocks...and there she was...a brindle pit...standing on the sidewalk....she stopped...stared at me....tensed up.....and then her whole hind end started wagging her tail so hard I thought she would fall over, she ran to me and licked me to near death!!! LOL. The dog belongs to a friend and he was out there with her and I know this dog...she is the sweetest girl. Always wants to love on someone

Here's his Momma.
Could Momma be a Plott Hound mix? (I could see a Plott/Pit mix, perhaps.)

(This dog is also labelled a Plott Hound, and seems to have similar ears to Momma, but I'm not sure I believe this photo is of a pure Plott)
And then there's this picture I found, Plott/Lab mix:

He looks exactly (creepy almost) like my AmStaff! He had a little bit of lab in him. Your dogs build is exactly like Pringles's was! That's awesome and weird at the same time (Pringles RIP). I would say he's a lab/American Staffordshire Terrier cross!

I'd never even heard of a Plott Hound but it's amazing how much that second picture looks like Brutus' mom! She is a bit shorter and her jaw is a bit more square, but other than that it is a good call. I particularly like that one because I'm guessing a lot of people haven't heard of it so if there comes a time when Brutus breed needs to NOT list any Pit, "Plott Hound Mix" will be the perfect cover-up... or I mean, response!;)

Hayflinger, I though Catahoula too when I saw the pic. I definitely agree there's pit, or at least bull terrier in there. Don't know about the boxer, but he is built similar to a friend's lab/pitt.

This little mystery guy ATE the whole top out of one of my cowboy boots last night! Grrrrr.... and he peed and pooped in the house - nice puppy. His owner is staying with us and went camping for the three day weekend - imagine my surprise when I pulled into my driveway and realized he'd left for the weekend and Brutus was still in the kennel - he owes me BIG time... I think I'll go pick out my new boots. ;)

Well, Brutus turned a year old a little over a week ago and... he is now mine. He was here for dogsitting while his owner visited family in Hawaii but he called last night to say he is moving there. I can't handle FIVE dogs, my four already push my limits with the other animals, so I am in search of a home for him. Anyone?
I thought it would be fun for those of you who helped me guess his breed to see what he looks like all grown up... although I expect he'll still fill out some more.
Pics of Brutus on his first birthday 12/06/09.

You're right EW! The condition I agreed to take him for the month visit was that when he returned he would finally give me the $150 he owes me for the the two pairs of boots Brutus ate back in May. He says he'll "drop by to say goodbye" when he comes home to get his stuff in January... we'll see. You know, it is for the best though as I have always felt a bit guilty that I helped place Brutus and didn't make a wise choice. His life has been constant upheaval and not the best care... he was dropped off with a bag of "AttaBoy" that I didn't bother opening. I can deal with him for now - until the perfect home comes along.

Tough looking!? Hee, hee - he is such a baby... my Bentley (the Golden) is scarier than him. I kind of like hearing that though as I've never thought of it knowing how dopey he is but I like that he might scare off a stranger - moreso than the Golden I'm sure!;)
I contacted the woman that had his sister and lost her to getting hit by a car in October. She' commented on how cute he is so I asked if she wanted him... she wrote me back a HUGE list of conditions for her to take him. I understand wanting to be careful but he is only a year old and I told her his owner had lived in five places in the ten months he'd had Brutus and done hardly any training. I was honest and wrote back that he has ZERO aggression, loves other dogs, loves other cats, knows sit and stay, doesn't jump up, is neutered, only chews his own toys NOW, but that YES - he does run off if given the chance and would need some training... and he thinks the horses want to play and if they snake their heads out at him he jumps at them. I told her we are working on these things and I've only had him three weeks... she wrote back "nope - I can't deal with that". I suppose I'm glad she's honest but COME ON... some people expect too much and don't want to put out any effort. Yes, I'm a wee bit irritated but perhaps it's just a sign she's not the one for sweet Brutus.
