Tiara's done it again. She's not lame, but she's not very comfortable. :( I hosed it off (while darting away from her leg) and put on some Furacin. I was told it keeps flies away-- and now it is fly season. Here's a picture.

Should I have wrapped it? Her field is only a tiny bit muddy now.

After researching... Is Furacin carcinogenic, and does really promote proud flesh? I've never used it before.

When skylar got a couple bad gashes we would hose it off every morning and put swat on it- keeps bugs away (its a cream, which Im sure you knew lol:)) and they healed up nicely we never wrapped it or anything like that.

Thats a pretty nasty gash, I hope she's ok!
Good luck!

I have furazone, and use it for a lot of other kinds of scrapes, but have been told it should not be used "below the knee" or in this case, "below the hock", because it may cause, or at least not hinder, proud flesh there.

That said, this doesn't seem to be the type of wide open wound where we usually see proud flesh. It's pretty closed, and if it doesn't get infected, ought to heal quickly. If it swells up, or keeps breaking open when she moves, then I'd call a vet.

It's not in an easy place to wrap.

As for carcinogenic... it may be, if you used it all the time, there's certainly warnings all over it.

The gash is deeper around the hock, and it gets shallower as it goes down the leg. There's only a tiny opening where it's deeper. Hopefully I won't have to deal with proud flesh. How long does it take to form? I was out on Monday and she was really happy. I free lunged her around the ring without any problems, and I didn't notice any abnormalities. It must have happened late on Monday or sometime Tuesday.

Thanks! I've never actually heard of it before. A boarder recommended it to me, and I decided to try it.

@Scoot: I was told it keeps bugs away nicely. :) Should I consider getting some?

The main concern there is if there's envolvement of the joint capsule. You don't want to deal with a joint infection. If it's all clean, I usually use Blu-Kote. As mentioned nitrofurazone can cause proud flesh, so can scarlet oil.

It is likely going to cause some pain, it's location stretches and compresses and constantly pulls it back open. That will encourage rapid growth of granulation tissue. Proud flesh is just excessive granulation tissue, essentially something goes wrong with the wiring, and that granulation tissue never gets shut off. Once that hole is healed over, I might switch to Wonderdust to help shut the granulation tissue off.

I dont know much about the stuff you were using, but swat did work very well for us

If it is open around the hock joint I would have a vet out asap! I made the mistake of not calling the vet out and found out there is nothing between the hock joint and skin really. There is no muscle layer there. If the wound over the joint is weeping a yellowy goop that is joint fluid which means the joint capsule was broke and it is very susceptible to infection. Wrap it now and call a vet. It does look like it is weeping over the joint from the picture but the angle is hard to tell.

Mercury did this and it was a year before he was sound enough to light riding mainly because I waited a week to call the vet after it happened and the joint became severely infected. I just about had to put him down several times during the whole process

Oh no the goopy yellow stuff is the Furacin. There was a tiny bit of blood before I washed it, but no fluid or anything. No pus, etc. She's walking on it fine, but I didn't try the trot. I'll go out to see her tomorrow. How can I wrap the hock? I've dealt with the granular flesh before (still have meds from it) but not since she got a gash in her side and that was a pain to fix.

I'm so broke. :( I don't need this now! I'll call the vet if anything happens tomorrow.

Thank you everyone for your help!

I use Alumaspray with something like this. Spray it on and leave it, coats it for bugs and you don't have to worry about proud flesh.

Awww, yes on the Swat. Its great stuff to have around this time of yr.

That looks nasty. I hope she heals up well.
Id hose it a couple times a day, then put Swat on it.

What did she get into? Darn horses, find anything to hurt themselves on.

If you wrap, I would use 4 x 4 gauge, then vet wrap it, like a figure 8, then down the leg a bit and let it snug to itself. Not to tight, just so it holds. Make sure, if you wrap, to use some gue over the cut so the gauge dosnt cling to the cut.

I went out today to look at it. Talked to the barn owner, and he said that there was a hoofprint 2 feet outside the fence line. I'm guessing she tried to kick out, or somehow got her leg stuck between 2 fenceboards? Because I'm starting to doubt that it's a puncture wound.

Another question... Is proud flesh all pus like? She had a tiny bit of white film on the open skin, but nothing more.

Thanks!

Proud flesh looks more like raw hamburger, boiling from the wound.
