I was wondering what kinds of meds there are out there for dogs with arthritis. Right now he's on Deramaxx and it's so expensive. It works great as he's out running and playing but it's too costy for me right now. What else is out there that works? I need something to take the pain out of his hips and shoulder. What else would work that's just as good and is something I can buy in the store.

That you can get in the store? I don't know. By prescription - Rimadyl. It's not real cheap, but I don't know what you're paying for the other stuff, and it does work.

I paid 40.00 for 10 pills. It's pretty expensive. I will call my vet and see if Rimadyl will work for him. I just want something that's going to keep him mobile and pain free. He was having a hard time just getting up to get down from the futon. He couldn't jump up on the futon anymore and doesn't do stairs. After being put on pain relievers he's back to himself again. I want what's best for him but need something a little cheaper then what Im' using. I'll definately check into that.

How big a dog?

Rimadyl is much cheaper than that. from .50 cents a pill for a small dog, to about a buck a pill for a large one. And you may not have to give it every day, once you've got him back to feeling good, it may take only a maintenance dose less often to keep him there.

He's about 35-40lbs. He's 5 lbs overweight. I guess he's small/medium. He's a schnoodle. That's pretty cheap for pills. Better then what I'm paying now!

I used the 75mg rimadyl which is the daily dosage for a dog that size. My vet charged $75. for a 60 day supply. She seems to charge about a dollar per mg. when purchased by the bottle. I feel that is too costly when I can get it for less with a script online. There is also a generic called Novox. I would ask the vet about that option as well. My dog can get by very nicely on half dose most of the time. That helps a lot.

Rimadyl is magic. It helps Piper with her torn ACL. She doesn't even limp when she is on it. It is cheaper than what you are paying. I give a half dose as well because a full dose makes her act like a puppy and i'm afraid she will tear the other ACL. . . she needs a touch of the pain to realize she's not wonder dog. ..

My dog Bentley is on Rimadyl right now too, and it has helped him so much. I always make sure I feed food with it so it doesn't upset his tummy. My vet charged me $35 for 30 tablets, Bentley gets 25 mg. twice a day (he is about 20 lbs.).

My 95lb black lab was on Rimadyl last year for awhile when he injured himself - it was great and not terribly expensive.
