View Full Version : My horrible experience with the clinic my kitten was neutered at continued.....

I *really* wish the neuter voucher I got from one of the local humane societies was redeemable at the clinic I normally go to (and now work at). Because I am so incredibly upset with the place I ended up going to for Cheat's neuter.

Not only did they screw up my estimate and end up overcharging me by $40, but now he has a really bad infection at the surgical site. As it turns out, he's PROBABLY had it since the neuter (around May 5th). When I picked him up, he was a bit puffy where they had to make the abdominal incision since he was cryptorchid (one testical was up in the abdomen while the other had dropped). Checking the incision at home, I figured it was normal. I've never had cats before.....or, well, not since I was a toddler anyhow.... And he's always had a chunky little belly, so dummy me saw the puffy shaved tummy and thought that was normal seeing as the vet did not show the site to me when I picked him up and did not mention anything otherwise.

Well, he layed around like animals normally do after operations, but he started feeling better a few days later and started trying to play, etc... This week I was looking at him thinking, huh....he looks skinnier. Then I realized, you know, he hasn't been rushing the food bowl like he normally does at feeding time. So yesterday I got home and he was just very sick looking. Not a happy camper AT ALL. Even so, he still tried to play a *little* bit when I got out his favorite toy. Figured I'd make an appointment with my vet when I got to work this morning to bring him in this afternoon. Did that, got home....and he's just out of it. Laying on the dog's pillow very obviously one sick little kitty. :(

I take him in....and here is the perk of working at a vet clinic - went right into the back room and helped my vet give him fluids and examine him. He has a temp of 105.4. :( :( Very high and she was thinking maybe we should hospitalize him, but since I'll be there at 9am tomorrow morning anyway, she told me to go ahead and just bring him in with me then. So she gave him some Metacam and some antibiotics....it looks like the surgical site is ok on the abdomen as well as at the scrotum - it's this funky area inbetween that's swelled up like a balloon. We're going to see how he reacts to the fluids and antibiotics....and go from there. If that doesn't seem to help, then we're looking at a CBC and other FUN things....

But thankfully....because I work there....and because my vet is seriously an awesome, awesome, AWESOME lady....I don't have to pay right now and won't have to pay everything all at once. So we can do everything it takes for my little fuzzball to make him feel better. My vet said that they've seen a couple of other animals who went there for surgeries and they came home with infections as well.

She sent me home with a bit of canned food and some chicken flavored baby food to try to coax him to eat. He ate a little bit of the canned food....we'll try again in a while to see if he wants anymore of it.

Please keep him in your thoughts - I'm really worried. :(

poor baby :( Sending healing thoughts his way

that's great that you get the perks though...one of my friends is a vet tech and she had to take in one of their cats tonight to work on it--fracture and need to amputate 3 toes(she said she'll pull through fine), guess the kitty decided to check out the engine of her mom's vehicle...and got an upclose look at how it works when started.

Poor baby, I hope he'll be better soon. Any surgery is scary. Hugs to him, only good thoughts that he'll be back to normal real quick.

As of 9:00, his temp is down to 104.1. Still uncomfortably high (normal is between 100 and 103)....but at least it's gone down some. And he's nibbled a bit at the food... He's still just laying around looking very sad. Hopefully he continues to improve overnight and tomorrow.

Thanks for all the good thoughts guys! I hate having sickly critters....I'm a worried mom. :(

This morning his temp is down to 101.7. So good...we're back to normal. Still a BUNCH of swelling. But I'm off to work in about 45min, so I'll post an update later today/tonight, depending on if I go to the barn or not.

His temp went back up to 102.4 or so during the day...still in the good range though. He got some more fluids and a Metacam perscription for the rest of this week and next week. He's much more active and eating tonight.

At about 3am this morning, he woke me up searching for lovings and cuddling....which was definitely a good sign.

He'll be coming back in to work with me sometime next week if the swelling's still not going down. But right now, he's doing much better.

Cheat's acting much more normal today. He's running and playing with my other cat and he's back to his usual lovey "in your face" self. He's gaining some weight again because he's eating normally and the swelling is finally starting to recede. Thankfully...
