I *really* wish the neuter voucher I got from one of the local humane societies was redeemable at the clinic I normally go to (and now work at). Because I am so incredibly upset with the place I ended up going to for Cheat's neuter.
Not only did they screw up my estimate and end up overcharging me by $40, but now he has a really bad infection at the surgical site. As it turns out, he's PROBABLY had it since the neuter (around May 5th). When I picked him up, he was a bit puffy where they had to make the abdominal incision since he was cryptorchid (one testical was up in the abdomen while the other had dropped). Checking the incision at home, I figured it was normal. I've never had cats before.....or, well, not since I was a toddler anyhow.... And he's always had a chunky little belly, so dummy me saw the puffy shaved tummy and thought that was normal seeing as the vet did not show the site to me when I picked him up and did not mention anything otherwise.
Well, he layed around like animals normally do after operations, but he started feeling better a few days later and started trying to play, etc... This week I was looking at him thinking, huh....he looks skinnier. Then I realized, you know, he hasn't been rushing the food bowl like he normally does at feeding time. So yesterday I got home and he was just very sick looking. Not a happy camper AT ALL. Even so, he still tried to play a *little* bit when I got out his favorite toy. Figured I'd make an appointment with my vet when I got to work this morning to bring him in this afternoon. Did that, got home....and he's just out of it. Laying on the dog's pillow very obviously one sick little kitty. :(
I take him in....and here is the perk of working at a vet clinic - went right into the back room and helped my vet give him fluids and examine him. He has a temp of 105.4. :( :( Very high and she was thinking maybe we should hospitalize him, but since I'll be there at 9am tomorrow morning anyway, she told me to go ahead and just bring him in with me then. So she gave him some Metacam and some antibiotics....it looks like the surgical site is ok on the abdomen as well as at the scrotum - it's this funky area inbetween that's swelled up like a balloon. We're going to see how he reacts to the fluids and antibiotics....and go from there. If that doesn't seem to help, then we're looking at a CBC and other FUN things....
But thankfully....because I work there....and because my vet is seriously an awesome, awesome, AWESOME lady....I don't have to pay right now and won't have to pay everything all at once. So we can do everything it takes for my little fuzzball to make him feel better. My vet said that they've seen a couple of other animals who went there for surgeries and they came home with infections as well.
She sent me home with a bit of canned food and some chicken flavored baby food to try to coax him to eat. He ate a little bit of the canned food....we'll try again in a while to see if he wants anymore of it.
Please keep him in your thoughts - I'm really worried. :(
