Myst is a black/white Tobiano Pinto. She is 7 yrs old. I was told she was Quarter/Paint, but not registerable as a Paint, but a Pinto. Some of you have read where I have found, vet, farrier, people who have seen her, agree that there is some draft in her, maybe only a small amount, but were thinking Perch. Not like people have never lied in their sales ya know.
Thing is, she shed out with white flakes on her now where she did not have before. Her black was always black and her white was white, no other markings.

my haffy is like that too...i was told it was sabino roaning...some years it's more apparent on her than others. Last year she had sections like your girl does now...this year it's very faint and mainly just on her rump. The first spring I had her she only had the white hairs on her shoulders...lol
as a side note: horses with draft blood can't be registered pinto

Is it age? I've noticed white hairs through Solon's coat more this year than any other.

Being as old as she is, that certainly is not her turning gray nor is she roan. Most likely it would be considered ticking, possibly Rabicano or Sabino.

No, shes only 7. Not old enough for ageing color.

Aww, I'm not a big fan of Sabino-- thinking that is what it is, but she's still pretty! Melee had it too.

Is she out in the sun a lot? Is it fading?

No, she browns out when she fades or sheds.
The horses are in a treed area, they get sun, but not enough to fade out.
If its hot, they stand under the shelter also.

Sabino is a white pattern...can be as minimal as a bit of white on the face and legs to nearly all white.

Usually(I need to check my sources but I'm sure if it is always) horses that carry the sabino gene have a white lower lip and/or chin, which leads me to think it just might be rabicano. Usually Rabicano shows up a white hair at the top of a solid colored tail, which in Myst's case with her being a Tobi, she could have both and the 'coon tail' wouldn't be obvious because of her other white pattern.

Wow Vick, don't know what to say on that one. Maybe she does have some Roan in her?? Or did she ever have a bad case of fungus in those areas at one time?? I know those bite marks on Dallas back have shed out to a different color.

Nope, she has always been healthy as a horse...LOL.
No saddle marks, no fungus, nothing.

Sabino.....most likely the same with Salon.....

rabicano roaning usually starts at the flank and spreads outwards though too(sometimes just in the flank area, sometimes covering much more of the horse, but more concentrated at the flank)...this just seems random, which makes me want to say sabino
Myst does have have facial markings, right? Her head isn't all black is it? If she was nothing but Tobiano her head would be marking-free. Sabino is believed to be the main cause of facial markings and is also typcially the culprit behind small areas of roaning like those in your photos.

I don't think Solon is Sabino. It's age. He's been jet black up until the last year or so. He will be 12 in a couple of weeks. And his white hair are just patches around his face along his neck etc.
Sorry about her change Vicky - you could dye it!

Tobianos CAN have face markings. Their face is either all dark or with star, strip, snip.
Myst only has a star.

well runner is only 9 and he is roaning out also .... he had very little whate and now he is getting it everwhere..ill try to get pics .
Yes - tobianos can have facial markings. However, something other than the tobiano causes those. It is theorized that most facial markings are caused by one of the forms of sabino. UC Davis only tests for SB1 right now - there are believed to be multiple forms of sabino to explain facial markings & leg markings of horses who otherwise are not pinto in nature.
