Hubby and I decided to check out a local auction Saturday and of course, I couldn't help myself, I just had to bring one home.
This is Sasha (her name was Shady, but I think Sasha suits her better). She's 6 years old and I watched the girl who took her to the auction ride her around the place all day long and found out as much info as I could about her. I was hooked and waited what seemed like forever for her to come into the ring for bidding (got her for $240). The really amazing thing is that she has quietly taken over as alpha mare from my Rosie girl. I never thought I'd see the day. She's a little nervous and jumpy, but she's settling down more every day. Next weekend I'll hit the trails at the state park with her and see what she knows.

Unbelievable price. For that price, she's a lucky girl indeed. :)

Oh there were some sad cases at the auction. There always are. Someone dumped an ancient, badly swaybacked, blind in one eye, with a crooked hind leg, buckskin gelding. He sold for $5. Someone bought him just to euth him. Poor old guy.:(
There were alot of no-saled horses because some couldn't even get bids and if they did, the bids were ridiculously low. Alot of horses sold for $50 to $150. Very sad.

It is very sad, but I am thankful that someone bought the old guy to do right by him. And I'm glad some took their horses back home for another day. And I'm glad for your pretty new mare.
I don't go to auctions, I can't take the heartbreak or it would make me broke, one of the two. They're all sad, but the old ones who have worked for people all their lives and deserve better thanks, they're the ones that haunt me.

I can not go to auctions because I want to buy to many and tell 1/2 the people off for treating animals so crappy and others for being to stupid to own horses.
Nice mare for an awesome price.

I couldn't agree more WB. I don't think I could handle an auction either. But your new girl is very nice looking and a steal at that price! Can't wait to see how you guys come along together!

I felt really sorry for the girl who took her to the auction. She was heartbroken but had to do it. I'm just guessing but she couldn't have been more than 18 or 19. She was losing the place she was keeping her and couldn't afford to move her anywhere else. I think she felt better when she met us and we assured her that her girl would have a good home. The backwoods livestock auctions host a pretty rough crowd and lots of sleazy traders and kill buyers. Hopefully it helped her knowing her horse didn't go to any of them.
The auctions are really hard for me too. It's been 2 years since I've been to one and will probably be even longer before I ever go again.

Your new girl is beautiful - I love the Bays!
I'm curious about the old man going for $5. I'm thrilled that someone will take him home and put him out of his misery but where were the kill buyers? Was he so bad he wasn't worth anything to them? I ask because at our local auction a horse never goes that low in price because the bottom price is usually whatever the horse is worth in meat as the kill buyers snatch anything up once the price is that low. This is why I can't go to the auction... I end up in tears every time I even look through the pens.

Ditto. I hate going to auctions because it just breaks my heart. Whethers it's horses, goats, sheep, or cows, I want to rescue them all.
To the O.P.: Congratulations on the new mare.:) I hope she works out for you.

I've already told my hubby IF we buy another horse, we will go to the auction and get another senior horse. WB is right...they have been there done that and it's not fair to just dump them at an auction. I have ALMOST come home with a few, but at teh end of the day...luckily the auctions we have been to ...a private owner has bought a senior horse to take home...so at least the kill buyers didn't get them.
Now we have alot of reservation horses go through and the kill buyers do get those. These are horses that nobody has handled and are wild as all get out. It's sad to watch them go through knowing what their fate is.:(

I dont mind auctions. I enjoy a good tack auction, saves me bucks I tell ya.
I like to stay for the horses, but just look. Im sure IF I had more property, there would be some just hanging out, enjoying their life.
I love the new mare, she is very pretty!!

ME TOO!
i see that happen alot ... people ride their horses for years and years and when they can't be ridden anymore or jump high enough, they are like "see ya later" ... i think thats horrible. all the years of service they do for us and they just toss them to the side for one that get be ridden into the ground again. & :(

Congrats on the new mare! She's a cutie forsure.
I agree WB, the old ones are the ones who deserve to be retired with dignity. So what if they can't be ridden anymore.

She's 6 years old and 15h. Her previous owner got her from the Amish and she said it took some time for her to gain her trust.
The farrier came today and she was a bit of a challenge for him. Her feet are in good shape so it's obvious someone has been trimming her but our horses need shoes for the rough trails we ride. I've tried not shoeing and ended up walking back with a sore horse a couple of times. She did ok for her fronts, but really didn't want her back feet messed with. I told him just to put shoes on the front and trim the rear for now.
She was so good for the girl Saturday at the auction that I know there's a good horse in there. It's just going to take a little time to build a relationship with her and get her to trust us. She doesn't do anything threatening like kicking or charging, but she does NOT want to be caught. She spins and runs away so she's going to have to wear her halter for a while. Normally I don't like to turn them out with a halter on but I have to be able to catch her. LOL

She was calmer this morning when I went out to feed. She let me put her in a stall but got very upset when the other horses were let out and I didn't let her out right away. She rammed the stall door, bent the latch and escaped. Our draft cross leans against the door until he bends the latch and can escape, so we put a bar across it to brace it. Next time I'll remember to do that for her.
She did walk up to me a couple of times this morning and let me scratch her and even allowed me to walk up to her without spinning and running off. Baby steps.

Sounds like things are coming along great for you guys. Too bad about the stall door, but at least you have it figured out for next time.

We took Sasha to the state park today and she did fantastic! I'm so happy with her! She stepped right on out and did not spook at anything. It's such a huge relief! You just never know what you're gonna get in an auction horse.

awe she's so cute! I love the color.
Congrats on her doing so well on your ride! You are so right - you never know what you are getting with an auction horse. Heck, even private sales can toss you a surprise. Glad it all worked out.
Now, Any photos of the ride today?
