I haven't been on here in awhile, its a really busy time for me but my dog was run over basically this afternoon THOUGH he seems fine, no walking problems or anything. I didn't see it but my husband did and said it was across his back end/mid section. I checked him out and no swelling or anything but now he's shivering. He's my baby and comes and lays by my feel so he's here beside me and I've put him a blanky and covered him to keep him warm but I'm just wondering about internal injuries. He show no obvious signs of trauma other than the shivering so can anyone tell me if I should be concerned or not?

Shivering could also be a sign of pain somewhere.
He's moving around 'sound', and his expression, attitude, appetite, bowels, etc all seem fine?
I think obviously there's reason to be concerned. Man... it's a crummy weekend for finding a vet if you need to. What are your options?

Yes, get that dog to a vet now. He had a car run over his mid-section. You don't know what you don't know - go now.

WB, first I LOVE your new pic! And I need it!
Secondly, yes other than the shivering he appears totally normal. No attitude, physical, etc difference. From what hubby says the place where he got hit he was sorta in an impression/indention in our drive so that will most likely account for him still walking around and living! When I noticed him shivering beside me I called to him and he came and 'stood' up in my lap while I was in my chair. I just don't know how internal injuries can effect them so I'm concerned there. He's very alert and moves with ease otherwise. With a blanky covering him there are no shivers at all and resting peacefully.
This is my angel and I would hate for anything to happen to him!

I think you should take the dog to the vet. Why chance it?

I'd agree that if this happened on a Tuesday morning - I'd run him up to the vet.
But seriously... what are the options for late evening on a Saturday of a three day weekend where you are? Is your vet on call?
We have an emergency clinic here, but not everyone has that. And honestly, if the symptoms were as mild as described, I might avoid that altogether. Our emergency clinic costs a fortune just to get in the door. Not something to be done lightly.

Thank you WB, Really the only 'symptom' he's showing is shivering. Everything else is normal. We have spent more than enough on after hours care on animals lately and really truly can't afford to call one or visit one for no reason. Thats why I posted here hoping someone with medical knowledge would post and let me know if the shivering was a symptom of severe injury or not.

I just don't know. I hope he's OK and will check back in later to see, so keep us posted.

I will, he really does seem ok except for the shivering. Even crawls up in my lap. I'm really hoping he's ok, if you remember we recently had the choking mare with foal that costs us 1500 + so we really can't afford more vet bills right now.

I know how tough this is. Bless you
If I knew how to send you a private message I would. Do you know how to do it, so you can send one to me?

Does anyone know what I could give a dog for soreness or pain?

Im sorry to hear about your dog. I do hope he is ok.
It happened in your drive? Had to be upsetting to your husband for seeing it.
As far as meds, hes in pain now? Sorry to hear that.
Really without a vet visit, possible internal injuries, its hard to say, you dont want to cover the symptoms.

You can give a dog buffered aspirin appx 10 mg per pound but aspirin does thin the blood as do many pain killers and if your dog has any internal bleeding the aspirin could make this worst. The shivering can be caused by pain as WB said but, also, shock can cause it too. If you can keep him covered with a blanket and rub him down as much as possible to keep him warm and stimulated until you can figure out more of any injuries he may have sustained.
If he seems to be eatting, drinking, urinating, pooping this morning and acting his normal self then I would try the aspirin for soreness (only if no blood is in urine or stool)
I hope your boy comes out okay with just some soreness.

Thanks for all your posts. He's doing good this morning, slept with me last nite and I kept a check on him. I did keep him covered last nite for the shivers, haven't given him anything just wanted to make sure that if he had other sypmtoms (sp?) I would know it. But thankfully this morning he's bright eyed though not so bushy tailed! You can tell he's a bit sore/stiff but other than that all seems well.
He's a heeler mix and can't resist chasin the neighbors truck when he leaves our house, I hope this breaks him of that! My husband was freaked out about it and only came to tell me about it after he saw Kylar jump up and run off back to the house. I would have been a basket case if I had seem it!

I just caught this thread- I hope your dog is okay this morning.
Vacker Hast is right- shivering can be a sign of pain, shock, or both. I understand all too well why you're hesitant to just jump and take the dog to the vet, but there could be serious consequences from this that might not show up right away. Is there any way you can at least talk to a vet on the phone? They can help you determine if this is a true emergency, or something that can wait until after the holiday.
I also agree with 4myquarter- you're way ahead with the vet bill now, than a huge one later, or worse yet, the loss of your dog.

Oh my.....I hope you can get him to the vet ASAP. Shivering is definitely a sign of pain. Like Vacker told you, aspirin can be given.... But, it sounds like your dog needs x-rays, he may have internal injuries. Is he able to pee and poop OK yet?

Just another update. He's still fine and 'everythings' working ok. He was stiff it looked like when we woke up the next morning (after the accident) but by that afternoon he was acting like nothing happened. He HAS to be the luckiest dog ever! Or me, not sure which. After hubby showed me where he was hit in the drive there is an indention there so by the grace of God he landed in that and just got scuffed up mostly I think. From now on he gets put INSIDE before neighbor leaves!!!

Really? Where I live there is always a vet available 24/7.

Yea we should have vets avail. 24/7 here too but of course they cost a fortune and calling on some are worse than NOT calling anyone, which is why it recently cost me $1500 + for a choking horse. I would have definately called on someone if his symptoms were worse but honestly he seemed ok then later started the shivering bit but had plenty of energy and otherwise normal. I was mainly concerned whether i would have been able to 'see' some sypmtom of internal damage from his actions.
