my farrier cam up and did my horses today, when he comes up he always ends up spending 4+ hours here, lol, between taking his time with the horses because we are all talking and then hanging out with my husband talking about music interments. we have been experimenting with sterling trying to find a way to get her to stay sound on rocks and last time he put some thin pads on her and she was great, so before he came out he looked for 2 days trying to find more pads so we could put a new set on. found out that there is no where around her that sells them so he has to go to Oregon to find some. but sense he could not find and he just reused them. but we are so happy because SHE IS SOUND ON ROCK!! (i got her for free because she was not before and the owners did not want to put shoes on her:doh:) and he had to make fun of sterling because she has 3 out of 4 hooves that look great, lol. the other is recovering for foundering and has an old abscess scar. then it was Dusty's turn and she fell asleep while he was doing her. as well as joke that he never has to touch our horses back hooves, with all the rocks they wear them down perfectly, he will run a rasp to clean them up but nothing more. i have yet to get pictures of their hooves but i did sneak a picture of him , what i mean i got a picture of sterling, lol.

Since you're using a pad you outta go to a full frog support pad. Have him order them online, "can't find them" is rediculous.

www.harrypatton.com (http://www.harrypatton.com) . In So Cal, but they ship anywhere. Look under: Pads - Frog - Castle Plastics Full frog cushion. (or something like that) It will help everything. I very rarely ever use a plain flat pad, if they're not frog sore, then there's no point to not adding some support for the foot. Everything will do better, especially that previously foundered foot.

And they're cheap, I don't charge any more for them than I do the plain pads.

This is a frog support pad, but an open wedge style. They come in full flat, full wedge, and barwedge.

try living in this county, its true. there really is not much here and it did not help that i called him sunday and set the appointment so i really did not give him time to order then online. i think i am one of the only people in this county that even shoe their horses year round. the pads have actually formed to fit up against her frog form normal wear and getting packed with mud. if you want i can get a pictures tomorrow to show how its formed.

i wish that web site showed pictures of the pads, but the prices are great. the pads i have on her are just flat 1/8" pads and they where over $20!

Hey don't get me wrong, the pads are cheap, but most guys get $20-$50 a pair to apply them. (I get $15-20 for each foot I'm padding and then just charge for additional materials if I'm using multiple pads per foot) They take time, rivets, packing, oakum, and they're harder to nail up nicely. Not to mention if the horse pulls it's foot away and sets it down in the dirt before the shoe's nailed on you have to clean out all your packing, throw it away, and start over. It's gotta be done well with attention to detail or you end up with more problems than the pads are worth. (ever wonder why so many people are against them?)

There's pictures on Alvin's website: http://www.alvinfarriersupply.com/shop/?cart=125522&cat=5

BTW... you're preaching to the choir about the availability issue. I'm 3 hours drive to the nearest farrier supply.

when i said $20+ for the pads, that was getting the pads from a feed store in town after i asked them to order them for me, not for them and having them put on. if i could find a was to keep her sound without them i would love it. got any ideas?

Damn, that sucks. $1.85 is what I pay per pair for 1/8" plastic pads.

Get some pictures of his feet. From what I can see of the foot in the pictures you gave, I might have some suggestions.
