I need to take Yogi to the vet in June for his yearly shots...I am going to talk to my vet to see what he needs for sure, but just wondered what you guys gave...Last year he got a 5/6 way, I can't remember and I don't have the paper in front of me and a West Nile. What are current needs of horses, I have not kept up or heard of any new outbreaks. Just wanted to see what you guys thought and going to see what my vet thinks!

Cloe is vaccinated with rhino/flu, tetnus, west nile and rabies during the spring - this is what my vet recommends for our area. :)

Pandora gets Tetanus, EEE/WEE, Rabies and West Nile. All are given Twice a year except her Rabies. She gets them in February and then again in July. We have awful mosquitos and hot humid summers. So we have to keep her double protected and vaccinate early.

We do Tetanus, EEE/WEE and Encevac T in the spring only. I will also be doing a float for my boy as he hasn't been done for a few years.

Forgot to mention Vet checks for float too. She had it done back in February since it was hard telling how long it had been since her old owners did it.
It is recommended that vaccinations be given at least 2 weeks prior to the onset of mosquito season. This is so that the body has time to build up a significant defense against the insect-borne diseases that we vaccinate against.
Core vaccines that all horses should get in the spring are: EEE, WEE, WNV, Tetanus and Rabies. Of those, the first 3 are carried by biting insects. The other vaccines are recommended based upon risk factors in the horse's life---what kind of situation he lives in, what he is used for, his age, his geographic location. So, expect that your vet will plan on giving the core vaccines and discuss the other options (EHV, Influenza, Strangles, Botulism, etc) with you based upon your horse's specific situation. There simply is not a one-size-fits-all vaccination program for horses.

Ryle I could not agree more. Everyone has their own preferences and needs depending on the area. Also so horses have a hard time with certain shots as they age. Best thing to do is talk with your vet.

Sounds like the things he has gotten. I can't wait to talk to my vet and see what she recommends. I'm curious what she will say also!

Every region is different. But I thought she was asking what we did in our areas.

I think she was Cheval, I think they (and I know myself was ) just saying it did make a difference on different areas. Atleast that's how I saw it. ;)

I gotcha. Yea I think it was just been resaid so it was clear that it's best to do it for your area and not going by others. I think, but I could be wrong. That's atleast how I took it and meant it. :)

Just made him at apt. for June 6th at 11:45...I'll post after I get back from it and tell ya'll what he got. I think he at least needs a 5/6 way and the West Nile...the bottom pasture they go into has some standing water when it really rains and by the gate gets muddy. They are brought in when it rains real bad, but it can stay muddy for a while. I'd rather spend the money for the shot than have him get sick!

Has he not had west nile before? They may give him an initial shot then in six months he'll have to have a booster. That's how they did all of our horses when they first got them. Now they only have to have WN once a year.

He had it once but he never got a booster:( I'll have to mention it to the vet. I just feed like that is a good thing in our area, but the vet might say otherwise.

I doubt the vet would deny the horse the west nile shot. Too much of a risk. Let us know how it goes!
