Every time I open a thread, I see the amazon ad- and it's showing me nursing/health care books/textbooks.

Is it just me? If so, how do "they" know? That's a little creepy to me, ha ha.

From what you've browsed or bought previously. eBay is the same way. I got kind of a kick out of it when I finally figured it out. For awhile, I just thought they kept showcasing airplanes and motorcycles for sale. :)

Well, I understand that- but I'm not even logged in there. Is it just from some "code" of my computer? Sorry, I'm NOT tech-savvy in that way, anyway.

That's what's strange to me, though.. and LOL @ you, thinking they were showcasing airplanes/motorcycles, ha ha! :D

Oh, you mean here on the forum. I get the same thing, which is advertising from a superstore (Meijers) that isn't all over the country. It must be your IP address that those advertisers are connecting to what that same IP address has purchased from them.

Hmm, okay- IP adress does ring a bell, sort of. I guess it's all a little large for my- not as large- mind to wrap around? ha ha.

So is this IP address a part of my computer, then? And not related my house/location? Just wondering...

Hmm, well, I tried Googling and now I have a headache. IPv4, IPv6, LAN, WAN, NAT, IANA...

*sigh*

Nevahmind. ;)

The IP address is the subcutaneous address for your computer.

Bwahahaha! Just kidding.

Seriously, it's a bunch of numbers that are unique to your computer. So, a retailer might not know who you are, but they know that the computer at 152.159.221.158 (that's what those IP addresses look like) has been used to shop for A&P textbooks. So a retailer of textbooks like Amazon finds a match between that number in its database, and on this forum (from the Internet Service Provider who hosts the forum) and knows that you are a candidate to receive a textbook ad.

I don't know exactly how it works, but I think I've probably got it about right.

Oh my with the working- you go! I have been so blessed, not having to work since starting the actual program. I worked PT through my core and I can't imagine how hard it would be now! It is possible, though- lots of my classmates do it.

So ADN too- cool! Good luck to you!

Jackie.. you are a HOOT!! :) I guess that explains why they are always trying to sell me "EMT/EMS/Fire Fighting books" I do a lot of searching on that. Ha ha... I always noticed that too Carla but never thought much about it. Just thought my computer was stalkin me!

Yea, next semester its gets REAL tough so I'll have to drop most of the work. But see I work 24/72's for work so its fairly easy to work around the school schd. Plus if we are not busy at work I can sit here & do my homework or... in my case lately... sit on Baywind Forum... longer then I should! :cowboy:

It's the wonder of 'cookies'.

When the page calls up the Amazon ad, their site looks to see if your computer has an Amazon cookie. If it does, they use that to target the ad to your individual shopping history there. If you don't have an Amazon cookie, they either show a generic banner ad, or items they think might fit the content of the page.
