View Full Version : Horses went insane...?

So - I went out to feed the horses this morning and the 3 in the clearspan (open with no stalls) barn have decided that it is "absolutely terrifying".

I have no idea why - last night I fed them in there and they were perfectly normal - this morning they won't touch it with a 40 foot pole. I actually led one in there just to see what was going on, and he snorted and blew and as soon as I took my hand off him (I didn't have a halter on or anything), he shot right back out.

I've searched for animals, stuff on the walls, stuff in the hay, stuff that may smell funny, etc. The only thing I found is that there is a stack of wood behind one of the panels against the wall and it is possible some of the wood fell over, as there are a few that are against the wall instead of on the stack (but I don't know when this happened). These are NOT in the barn area where the horses are, just behind the panel wall of the barn.

I took a horse from a stall in another area and brought him in to see if it was terrifying to him as well - and he had no problem being in there. I gave him a bunch of grain, which lured 2 of the 3 scaredy-horses in. They stayed in there a little while to eat grain, but when another horse neighed loudly they shot out like crazy!

Currently, the 2 scaredy-horses are back in eating and the 1 indifferent horse is also in eating.

The last of the scaredy-horses, however (the one I tried to lead in earlier), is almost as far away from the barn as he can get, way out in the arena staring at everyone else looking sad. Poor boy - I hope he gets past it soon! If not, I suppose I'll go out and stand with him to eat as close as I can get him to the barn. He generally eats out of the feeder that is near where that wood is stacked, so maybe it fell while he was eating and scared him with the noise?? It certainly wouldn't have actually HIT him at all.

I hate it when bizarre things happen! Here's hoping all will be well tonight.

Once in awhile Cyn has pulled this with our barn, and we've never really known why either. The worst time was when we still had stall partitions, and she was closed in. She was nervous, and we were still trying to figure out why, when she panicked and climbed over and through the gate like it wasn't even there. For no reason we ever found. It's part of the reason we decided to remove the partitions and leave it open. She's lucky she didn't break a leg, not just the gate.

We've had lots of theories, from some kind of low short or bleed of electric current from either the wiring or the fence when it's really wet out, to some kind of critter that either passed near or got inside.

Then she gets over it, and she's fine for awhile, but once in awhile, she'll still be antsy about the barn for a few days... coming in to eat, but running out if there is the slightest sound.

And she's the bomb-proof one. Funny thing is, these episodes never have affected Bay, who is usually the snorty one.

Sorry I can't help... Billy only gets silly about going back into his stable after I've worked/groomed/something'd him if he knows it's about time to go out into the field :) Clever boy :P
I hope your horses settle down.. it's odd that you & WB have never worked out why they do it :S

Maybe something's creeping around at night? Like it isn't in the barn but it's close enough so that they can hear/smell it? They have better senses than we do.

I was carried through the air by a mare who spooked going into the stall. She had just been in there and the only thing that even changed was a flake of hay had been added and the stall was clean. Fred wouldn't go into the barn one day bnecause there was a goat in one of the stalls. I didn't even know about it until I finally walked him around the long way and he was still freaking out and I noticed the closed stall door.

I went back in there and walked around yet again - this time I saw a wasp's nest (but a teeny tiny one). I'll get rid of it, of course - but another theory is the "stung by a wasp" one. Maybe just the one got it and the others are panicky but not TOO bad because they didn't? I'll have to check them all out (again).

Like WB, I'll probably never know the true reason! Crazy horses :)

A little while ago scaredy-horse got about 15 feet from the barn and hung out awhile... so at least he's inching closer!

Oh - I definitely think it's a fair bet they got stung by those wasps!

Could be, WB - there were only 2-3 of the little buggers and it was pretty high up, but definitely a possibility!

This evening I went out to feed and they followed me in as if everything were perfectly normal - like they hadn't spent 80% of their day terrified of even getting close to the thing (especially Coors, my 1200lb scaredy-cat supreme!). Go figure!! Not a sniff, not a snort, not even a raised ear...
