Shavings aren't good for the small critters. They inhale the dust and can get respiratory issues. My vet told me about CareFresh type products. It's a shredded newspaper. Very absorbent and last much longer than shavings. It's a lot more expensive, but healthier for you pet and cuts WAY down any odor smell.

Carefresh is made out of shredded newspaper? I did not know that. That's what I use for my guinea pigs too. *seconds what cheval said*

Yep, the kind I bought from Petsmart wasn't the CareFresh brand but it was the exact same product and said it was made out of recycled shredded paper. Celluloise is used to make paper and cardboard and other stuff and recycled celluloise includes newspaper and other papers.

With my rabbits I use either wood stove pellets or yesterday's news in their litter boxes. I give them grass mats for something comfortable to lay on in their cages but they live in dog crates so its not a big deal if I don't give them anything.

I love this online store its mostly rabbit based but they do have a GP section http://www.bunnybytes.com (http://www.bunnybytes.com/)

I use carefresh since Thud is allergic to anything else. For me it can be got cheapest at TSC or Petfooddirect.com Buy big, it keeps plus saves you money and hassle of ordering or picking it up so often.

Carefresh is great as everybody else has said. Aspen is also okay, we used to use that.

We were also going to use fleece blankets and towels once we got everything set up but unfortunately we never got around to it and there are no more little buggers left. What happens is when they pee on the fleece, it wicks it down to the towel(or puppy pad, newspaper, etc - something absorbent) and then you can do spot cleaning for the poop (or litter train them if you can, they won't all do this). Just have two sets of fleece and towels so you can have one out while the other is in the wash. Also, we were going to build cages using cubes and coroplast.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.. I saw some Carefresh at tractor supply and that stuff is EXPENSIVE.. I've decided to see how Aspen works as I've read that it is perfectly fine to use, but I might give Carefresh a try when I get more money. I like their confetti bags.

For my critters I always used shredded newspaper and hay.

We tried the newspaper and ours ate it. :( *rollseyes* We tried fleece and it worked good to as a cheaper alternative. My piggy is allergic to Aspen so Carefresh it is. :( lol :p He's part of our misfit farm though. ;) My sisters had two g-pigs when they were younger and they used cedar for their bedding and never had a problem, but now I read not to use it, who knows? lol :p I've never tried it though. Only the g-pig safe kinds.
