The title pretty much gives away the question.

But you know the fleece people put on their halters? Yaaa what are they used for?

To protect their horse from worn spots on their face.

I don't think they are very neccesary but they are used for what mare said, to avoid rubbing on the bridge of the nose, cheek, and behind the ears. I think people also want to make wearing a halter more comfortable for the horse. Personally, I think it's babying a little. I've used them while shipping because my previous horse was a nut in the trailer and it really started doing a number on his face. He looked pretty funny with a head bumper and fleese puffs, lol.

I use them for trailering long distances, gives a little cushion if the horse chooses to rest his head on the side of the trailer and also a cushion for bums and bangs in the trailer.

We use them on Al when we are going to trailer him and he will be in a halter for a longer period of time than usual. When they are turned out during the day they are without halters and when they come in at night and are in their stalls they don't wear a halter.

To spoil your horse :)

And for the reasons everyone else said. For trailering, horses with sensitive skin, or horses that get bald spots where the halter rubs them... etc. I haven't used them, but I like the idea.

You know how a dog tries to get a muzzle off his face using his paws? Solon did that when I put the fleece on the noseband of his halter.

Maybe Solon thought that wacky squirrel was attacking his face! :hysterical:

LOL!

He might have. I don't know what he thought but he was REALLY irritated by the whole thing. I didn't know what it was for when I bought them. I'd never seen them before and people at the barn where I boarded had them so I bought them too.

Finally the BO was watching him and she said, you know, he really doesn't need that.

Oh well. It was entertaining. For me. :)

9 times out of 10 I'll agree with most of ya'll that it's just a spoiling thing that makes the owner feel better. But I have seen a few horses over the years that even an hour in the halter would rub the hair off their noses. Very sensitive skin critters! So they do serve a purpose sometimes.

I generally don't leave mine in halters, but on an occasion when I did, a couple of the horses had some rubbed spots. I wish I'd had them then.

Always use when trailering. Picked up the habit because the delicate show horses would arrive at a show with a rub from their expensive leather halters; the fleeces prevent this.

Will add that tackoftheday has some nice halter fleeces today. Good thing I don't need any (have some "oh so soft" merino sets), because good sales can take over my credit card.

I need to get some for my horses ,you can buy halters with fleece padding on them . Just makes it more comfy and prevents rubbing spots:)
