When I was young I thought I wanted a smallish bay mare....you can see "her" - the love of my life, in my avatar.

Mine wasn't by a long shot!! I wanted a either quarter horse or appy. Instead I got a hard headed Arabian bay. But he was the perfect 1st horse that I ever owned!! He introduced me to horse "ownership" in a very nice easy way. He spoiled me!

Wow, thats a hard one. I love so many horses breeds, colors, but fell in love with Paints on my Uncles Paint Ranch.
I think Ive always had a soft spot for them, and it is pretty cool that I ended up with City.

Haha~! I wanted the black stallion with a flowing mane and tail..... the one from the movie.

I GOT a Black App mare with a short tail........................................ BUT she was a good one, we learned a lot and did a lot together.

I wanted a 16 hand dappled gray gelding with a black mane and tail. My first horse, Keno, was a 15 hand bay anglo arab mare and I couldn't have loved her more! I was 13 years old and just happy to have a horse. ;)

I wanted a Thoroughbred, color didn't matter although I liked grays. I looked at 7 or 8 horses, all of which were Thoroughbred or part Thoroughbred. I ended up with a dapple gray Quarter Horse/Arabian that looked like a Thoroughbred  lol

Well my first was a small grey pony called Smokie also known as “The Little S*!t!! and no he was not the horse of my dreams….I had long harboured delusions about owning Black Beauty or at a pinch one of the Lippazania’s from White Horses.

My first adult horse (i.e one I bought paid for and kept all by myself) was Martini an 8 year old OTTB and he was no way what I imagined, I had always thought that TB’s were mad bad and dangerous…..he changed all that coolest horse I had ever ridden, got me out of more scrapes than I deserved……if I was out of position then the Wiley old bugger would slow down and shift me back so I was secure again…..had two speeds very very fast and turbo! But slowed as soon as my butt hit the saddle….

Never thought that I would be 40 years old creaming up a mountain path on an ex racehorse….loved that horse and wish there was a way I could have bought him to Holland with me but I figured that at 13 it would be unfair to drive him for a week across Europe to arrive in a cold damp country and a complete change of diet and routine. He was sold in Cyprus and I go see and ride him whenever I go back to visit….I have dreams of buying him back one day.

But he was very definitely not the happy hacker I had intended on buying for myself!

I always wanted a "spotted" horse. I was in love with appys. I ended up with a 15h solid black appy/QH horse that was my best friend from the time I was ten till we had to put him down 4 years ago when he broke his knee from being kicked.

Well, my current horse, Cloe is my first horse. I always wanted a gray horse, that's it, I didn't care how pretty the horse was, how tall, how healthy, what breed, as long as it was gray. Is that a smart way to go about purchasing a horse? Gosh no. I bought my pony and she wasn't the pretties, but I didn't care, she was gray - woot woot, dream come true. So she was what I expected appearance wise, or wanted, but as far as training goes, I was in for a world of hurt. I was not expecting to have to put the amount of training into my first horse as much as I did, but it worked out great, I trained her and our bond is closer than ever now. ^_^

When I first started riding I wanted a black gelding. I ended up with a chestnut pony mare who I wouldn't have traded for the world. She came as a package with another pony who a girl who rode with me bought... it was a black gelding, lol.
I eventually outgrew my pony and traded her for a bay Appendix QH and then fell in love with a horse I was showing for some clients and bought him. That was Even, my clyde/TB in my avatar. It wasn't until several months later that my mom reminded me that he was exactly what I had dreamed of when I was little. He would have been my dream boy no matter what his color though.

When I first started riding I was taking English lessons and I always dreamt of a 16hh bay TB gelding. My first horse that we bought is an Appy mare, along with an Appy gelding. Lol.

But our gelding is a horse from my past as well, and I wouldn't trade his grumpy stubborn butt for anything!

And Booty our mare, we've come along way and we have a good bond now. So it all worked out. I like to think that they found me instead of me finding them.

My first horse was a 2.5 year old BS bay paint with the littlest belly spot and a crooked blaze. We had an awesome bond I could do anything with her but ride her......it was just in her blood and now she is doing what she loves....bucking people off and is living the life of a queen. I was bound and determined to keep her but after getting thrown upteem times my mom made me sell her.......I practically gave her away when I seen where she is going and going to do what she was good at. She was a horse and that is all it took.......

I just wanted a horse!! My parents made me take lessons and lease horse after horse until they decided it was going to be a long term love and finally got me one of my own. Since I had been in Dressage training for about 6 years at the time I wanted a Warmblood of some sort because that's all I was ever around. My trainer had these beautiful Dutch's and Hano's and I thought (and still do) that they are so freakin beautiful!

My first horse ended up being a 15.2hh Chestnut TB mare with a 'tude. She was a VERY pretty girl but totally trained in Hunter/Jumper....and that's when i made the switch from Dressage to H/J and went out on my own. I wish I had pics :) I miss my Lucy girl :(

I was longing for these circus horses from Fredi Knie. Every year the circus would come to town and spend about three days there and I would skip school to just hang out there to see these white beauties doing all there little tricks and then would go home to our little oh so boring Haflinger mare. Yet what an angel she was.

I always loved Apps. but not Leopard Apps. I wanted either an App, a Black & White Paint or a Black horse. One day we were going somewhere and I saw a Leopard App at the farm that was owned by my now best friend. I looked at that horse and I knew he'd be mine one day. I just knew it, I can't tell you how but I knew he would be.

Yrs passed and my husband's friend had a Leopard App for sale. I knew he was the same one I saw yrs before. I got real excited but didn't know if it could happen. One day I was supposed to be at a bridal shower which I skipped because I hate that kind of stuff. We were out for a car ride and I told my husband to turn down the road where the App was staying. He was being ridden that day and the guy asked if I still wanted a horse and I said the one he was on. He said to come and meet him. He put his head on my chest and that was it. I rode him, all went well and he boarded him for us 'til we got a barn and fences. He gave me all the info I needed to care for him [He was an easy keeper] . Our farrier and vet were all help too.

That horse was the love of my life, he was healthy and he was smart and I loved him more than anything else in this world, we had a bond I can never explain. The day he died most of me died too. I've never met another horse who could come close to him. So I guess color wise he wasn't what I had always thought I wanted [He's really the only Leopard App I was attracted to] but personality wise he was that and more. I will miss him until the day I die and then I hope we will be together.

I only wanted a horse. I didn't care what color, size or shape, just a horse! My first horse was a very pretty bay that turned out to be psycho, literally. That horse was more then just a few fries short of a happy meal. He was good as gold on the ground, very gentle. Get on him and he turned out to be a monster that was not broke. My first ride on him, was dad putting me on him bareback and leading him, turned into me me holding on for dear life and dad trying to keep the horse still. Got him still I slid down and had 2 handfuls of mane, dad made me get back on and the horse was tense, but quiet. Dad was a trainer so we were going to start him under saddle since he wasn't broke as dad was told. Well, in the round pen he knocked dad down and started stomping a mud hole in him. The only way could get the horse off of him was to punch him in the nose, the horse backed up just enough for dad to get to his feet and on the fence with the horse coming right back at him. Needless to say, that horse went back where it came from and another was brought in, a 2yo unbroke filly that turned out to be a very awesome little mare.

Yes mine was - although I waited a long long time to get him. I had always wanted a big black horse - I think alot of little girls do from watching Black Beauty and The Black Stallion ;) I finally got him :)

Hmm.. I wanted a black horse with a white mane and tail and high white stockings. Before I knew a thing about horses.

I ended up with a gorgeous liver chestunt Arabian. I had him for several years and when he was old enough we spent tons of money getting him trained to ride but he was too much for me. I still knew very little about horses.. and well.. he was a hyper 4 year old. ;) Ended up selling him.. I miss him a lot, though.

I did.
I always wanted a bay tb. Always, when we started looking for horses to lease 7yrs ago I kept pulling up all the tb ads. lol I went and rode my sister's stb mare first, then the next day rode a lovely chestnut tb gelding, I really liked him, but the day I had gotten and email from my high school friend saying her mother co-worker had a 10yr old tb she needed to place asap.
We went and looked at him, he tried to kill me. I got in the car and told me sister, "That's my horse!" She tried her darndest to change my mind but a week later we went and got him. For 6yrs he wa my best friend, even during the manymany time he was laid up with one injury or another, he was and will remain, the love of my life.

He is still in MA at a friends barn with his new mom, whom spoils him. He is reitred now, and spend his days flirting with his girlfriend, a little morgan mare. I miss him terribly!!

Photo 1 is the day we went and looked at him
Photo 2 is the day we brought him home
and Photo 3 is our relationship. I love that big goon!

I don't think I really had anything in particular in mind.. I do know I liked bays, but I didn't care; I just wanted a horse!

Got the first one we went to see- a paint (well, a pinto anyway lol). Which is neat now that I think of it because a painted-up pony named Patches was the little mare I learned to ride on where we would go trail riding when I was little.. :)

I had a pony I raised but he was too small for me. When my parents saw that I wasn't losing interest in horses they told me I could get one so we started searching. That was in the day before computers so it was through ads in the paper/tack stores/word of mouth. I really wasn't looking for anything specific. I guess I was waiting for "the one". I remember trying out many horses. Some nicer than others but just no interest. A friend had gotten her very nice pony through a dealer in the area. He always had nice horses, so after trying out bunches, we took a ride to his place. I was trying out a real nice TB mare. I was really trying to like her because she was nice. There had been a man watching me ride. He said "I've been watching you ride and I think there is a horse inside that you may really like". I was game. We went inside and went way down the aisle and he walked over to the stall that had a closed top door. He opened the door and this horse stuck his head out immediately. My jaw dropped to the floor and I stood there and stared. I knew right then and there he was "the one". My non horsey dad tried to deal but the owner already knew the horse was sold and refused to budge on the price. The horse was mine that night. I adored him till the day he died.

Actually, I did!:D
I wanted a fairy tale horse, young, medium sized, healthy and great conformation. Tanner is a like a barbie doll horse, so yes, I got what I asked for. :) I also trained him myself so that is an amazing thing to feel with your first horse.
That is why I am SO glad I didn't end up getting the show mare I wanted! She was so well trained and we would have won many events at our local barn shows & she even did well QH. But that's not what I care about. Anyone who can ride, can sit on a well trained horse and take the ribbons... I chose to take a horse that knew nothing and make it into something. When I showed Tanner this year and we won many ribbons, it was the best feeling. Not because it was a first, second, etc. but it's because we achieved something together (what we couldn't have done when I first got him- that for sure!), we both tried our best & had a ton of fun doing it. Nothing can ever beat that feeling, we have an unbreakable bond and I love him to death!!

Yes, its kind of creepy. Dreamer was the first horse i actually "owned", although i had been riding/training/ and breaking/ loving horses since before i could walk.
I used to have repeated dreams throughout my childhood and the horse that was in them was almost ALWAYS Black with a stripe, the only difference is i dont think it had any white socks and the stripe was straight. It had a long thick flowing mane and tail.

When i got Dreamer though( as we all know) he was an unattractive mousy grey fuzzy weanling. He soon sheded out to be the horse from my dreams in a smaller version, and he is now maturing into what my dream horse was really made of. the long flowing mane and tail( although his is sunbleached).

I just dreamed of any horse with four legs. So yes. My first horse Gidget fit the bill nicely. She was a 14 hand grulla mare that was spunky and spirited and oh how many adventures we had!!! I got her when I was 10 for Christmas. I'd been taking lessons every week for 4 years prior to that so it was a dream come true!!! Unfortunately by the time I was 14 I was almost 6 foot tall and I looked a bit goofy on my 14 hand pony. . .luckily my dream horse (cause by then I had an opinion) was around the corner. I wanted a gorgeous gray mare around 16 hands and that is what Sterling is.

My first horse almost fit my dream horse. I wanted a palomino arabian mare, and I wound up with a palomino QH/arab gelding. He was the best horse, anyone could ride him (except my neighbour for some reason, but anyone else lol). He taught me so much. I sold him when I couldn't take him any further. I was ready for a bit more challenging and he was so docile & sweet, wouldn't hurt a flea type. I wanted hyper, ready to run, barrel horse extrodinaire. I sold Honey & bought Peppy who was my big fast black barrel horse extrodinaire for many years.

RIP Peppy & Honey :(

Dakota Sunrise
10-21-2008, 02:56 PM
Well.. my very first horse was a 4 year old pony when I was 11.... but I try not to think about that too much because it really didn't work out so I'll use Dakota as my first horse.

I didn't think my dream horse would be 18 when I got him, or built like he is (Dakota is very lean, a Saddlebred cross-, I prefered stocky Quarter horses), but I couldn't have cared less what color he was (but I did want a gelding!;)). I just wanted a horse to love. But is he what I expected? Not really. But I think he's better. A true dream horse. xD

Beauty obviously wasn't my first horse, but since we're on the subject she DEFINATELY is not what I expected her to be when I started the horse search again. I set out looking for a barrel horse that I could learn on and take to local shows. I secretly wanted a mare so I could run her in pink, but everyone told me to get a gelding. I ended up buying a skinny, neglected, forgotten mare that nobody really cared about anymore. She was terrible undersaddle and knew next to nothing, and she still has a LONG way to go. I'm yet to take her to a show, and she definately isn't the kind of horse that is going to teach me how to barrel race by calmly going in and running a nice, even pattern. Oh no, I'll be learning the hard way. We have our work cut out for us. But I love her, and I'd do it all over again. She needed me.
