I hope I'm in the right spot for this, if not I hope 'someone' will plop me down in the correct one!
We raise rabbits for meat and I decided that I would tan the hides and make cool stuff to sell from them. I just wondered how many of you out there enjoy real fur items and what kinds of furry things you would be interested in IF you were in the market. Currently I have in mind to make hats and throws to start with, maybe some scarf type items.
What might be on your fur wish list?

I'm sorry I'm not much of a fur type person. Not b/c I'm against it or anything. But I'm tru red neck ~ not high maintance. LOL. I'm sure you would have plenty of people that would be intersted in it!!
I like fur. With rabbit fur, I've gotten some very warm hats and trimming for collars and mittens. It doesn't hold up for coats and covers like coyote or buffalo, though. I probably just haven't had enough exposure to rabbit fur items.
Good luck.

I'm SOOO sorry but if you want the honest truth... the thought of wearing bunny fur turns my tummy. I have a house rabbit that I adore - like my cats and dogs and horses... so for me it would be equivalent to wearing dog, cat or horse fur. I DOOO understand that some people do eat rabbit and I do think that using a by product of that is a nice idea rather than throwing it away. Maybe for a necessity like warmth in the lining of gloves or a hat... just not for me... or probably the MANY other people on this site with house rabbits. (There is a whole thread with pictures in the pet section!) ;)

Yea the fur thing is a love/hate situation. Never know which way it will go! Sedona I can see your point too. If they were kept as pets I certainly wouldn't want to wear them either!
Mare - I don't know what type of hides you had the opportunity to experience but rabbit can be quite durable though if your talking about a 'work' type of garment then it wouldn't be the best.

I have raised pet/show rabbits for probably 12 years and don't like fur stuff. Just not my thing, if I raise them I won't eat them or wear them. But i'm sure there are others that will.
Zoe's going to scream if she reads this thread  lol

We had rabbits when I was young. Sold them dead or alive, and ate them.
We never tanned the hides, but ya, I like bunny hides.

make slipper's with them.
I like to eat rabbit, they taste good.
I understand people have rabbits for pets, but they are a food chain item.LOL
I know people you have goats, sheep cows as pets, and I know just as many who eat them too.
So I guess its just a personnal opinon thang.
I like tanned rabbit fur it is soooo soft.
They make nice coverings for small tables too.
Good luck with your tanning.
Let me know how the tanning goes, I want to tan deer hides but dont really know how yet.

What Sedona said. I don't eat any meat and the thought of bunny fur really upsets me especially when I look at my sweet little Roger Rabbit.

Seems like you oughta use every useable part of the rabbit. I hope you sell the feet for good luck charms!:p
Lining slippers with them would definitely be a good idea--soft and warm.

While I am not a huge fur person (although I love leather, go figure) I really like the slipper idea. Very cozy and very durable.

you raise them for meat and some profit ...so why throw away the hides.....colleges are a great place for those pelts.....they go as quickly as they come in....and doubled over with an elastic band at the back...they make great ear warmer head bands...if you can picture that.....sure you can...

I'm of the opinion that if they are being raised for meat it is more respectful to use every part of the animal as possible rather than through it away.
I think fur lined slippers, gloves and mittens sound cozy.

Oh...gosh....I can't even really read all the replies.....you see....I have a pet house rabbit, rabbits are as affectionate and smart as dogs.....I couldn't even imagine...... But I know not everyone shares my views. I do not wear fur of any kind tho.

Wow thanks for all your responses, really all of them! I'm sorry to those of you that don't like the idea, truly I am. But since we are going to eat them I don't want to waste anything soooo.
I never thought about slippers so thats a pretty cool idea, I may try that out. The headbands are too, and I have been trying to figure out how to create some ear muffs.
The lucky rabbits foot I'm not sure how to go about either as there is more than just the 'hide' to take into account. I need to check that out further but I have thought of it. I'll let you know if I make some Vickilynn!
If anyone here wants to see the products when done let me know. After the responses I don't know whether I will post them or not.

I think its commendable that you want to use all of them!! I have gone in the woods and saw headless bucks and whatnot- its a waste. Use the whole thing I say!

Maybe you can just warn people what you are showing since I know alot of us really do not want to see the products [Especially if we have pet bunnies that we love so much] but others might. If we know what you're showing we'll just skip the thread so the others can see what you are making since they are interested.
The thought of eating any animal freaks me out but that's just me, most people don't share my views and I don't try to push my views on anyone.

Love the fur lined slipper and glove idea. Rabbit fur is so very soft, I love feeling it. I don't wear fur but am not against it, I think it's great you are going to use all of the animal that you can. I'd love to have a pretty longhorn hide for a rug or wall hanging, rabbit fur though might not work for all hangings or rugs..it'd take so many hides LOL
