I was going through my mom's old albums today and found this picture of me on my grandparents' pony. As far as I know this was my first ride all-by-myself, the date on the back of the picture says August of 1981, two months after my 3rd birthday. The pony's name was Snooper, I remember this pony.
It looks like Snooper was giving me a little attitude and I was giving it right back, lol! I do wish someone would have told me not to yank on the poor pony's mouth:rolleyes: but still, not bad for a three year old who couldn't reach the stirrups!
I'd love to see everyone else's old riding pics!

Dont have any pics of way back when of me on a horse.
My mom did have me on with her when I was 11 months old.
When I rode my own, it was when I was 11 yrs old, no pics, bummer.
Yours is very cute though!!
Here is my dad as a kid on a pony.

One wonders why I like Paints/Pintos...lol Years ago it was common practice to have your kids pic taken on a pony, & it was always a pinto. I remember a guy leading a pony around looking for customers. The kids didn't really ride it, just sat there for a picture. Amazing that I saw that as I am only 30 +.
Most people are too sue happy for that to happen now. Kind of sad that it's gone.
Those pictures are priceless!

Well, I didn't start real young... I was probably 12 when I started hanging around at a neighboring appy ranch and asking if I could clean stalls, brush horses, ride... My earliest rides would have been on their old grand dam of a brood mare who had to be thirty.
Here I am at about 13 though, on my first horse, a mustang named Chico that they gave to me. :)

Yes, I have one of those pics too...on a black and white pinto pony. I should go back to mom's house and scan that one in also! Funny that my grandparents' pony was a black and white pinto also.

Chico was a beautiful horse...and surprise! a bay!;)
Snooper was my grandparent's pony but I didn't get my own horse until I was 13. Her name was Keno and she was a bay Anglo Arab.
Here we are together, I was 14 in this picture.

See Keno would fit right in around here :)

Since you posted one all dressed up here's one of me and Chico all dressed up for a show. He actually wasn't all that pretty, he was a big gangly drafty looking mutt of a mustang with enormous feet and a big ole head. But the boy could JUMP!

He came from down your way, actually, was found on property that also belonged to the same family I got to know up here, shot in the neck. They nursed him back to health, tamed him, and gave him to me.
I owned him a few years, and we went everywhere together... I sold him to a nice family, when I decided I wanted a fancier Arab show horse, which seems shallow, I'd rather have the good honest trail horse now. He'd probably be dead now, I've wondered about him many many times. I sure hope he had a good life.

Wow, WB, what a story Chico had! I'd like to think the new family loved him until the end of his years.
I never knew exactly how Keno's life ended either. It's always haunted me. My family moved from Oregon to Nevada and my non-horsie parents said she couldn't come with us. :( The last I heard she was in a muddy pasture and not being used at all. I never got any better updates after that. For a while I thought that maybe I could track her down one day but by the time I was ready to buy a horse I did the math and if she was still around she would have been a very old horse in her 30's.

awww this is a cute thread. :) I don't have any pics form my first ride alone. I was maybe 9. I actually found a button from one of those pony rides not to long ago (the ones that are at placees like bengtons where they just walk in circles. I'll have to look. I know I have pics of my first show. I'll have to hunt!

I have a few old pictures I scanned. My family used to go camping every summer.. We would go to a place that had horses we could ride. I remember being in a paddock first learning how to handle the pony before they would let me go out with my Dad and sister. His name was Billy. He was a pinto too. I am not sure how old I was,, maybe 8 years old?http://www.baywindfarm.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=905&pictureid=11848&thumb=1 ('http://www.baywindfarm.com/forum/album.php?albumid=905&pictureid=11848') http://www.baywindfarm.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=905&pictureid=11849&thumb=1 ('http://www.baywindfarm.com/forum/album.php?albumid=905&pictureid=11849')

I began riding at 2 off lead rein (just walking mind!) but when I was four I started 'proper' riding.. and I have a picture of what I believe to be my first jump... I stil have those orange wellies, I couldn't bear to let them go...
This pony was at a local riding school, he was totally bombproof - I hacked him out in thunder without him so much as flinching! We were going to buy him when I turned 6, but he coliced and had to be put down :( That was my first heartbreak - and the reason I couldn't throw out my orange wellies, they were the ones I always rode him in.

I know I have a picture of me on my first pony, but I would have to hunt it up and scan it.
Hate Windows Vista for that- when I scan a pic, it comes out tiny, and you see it as a small part of a large rectangle until I monkey with it- drives me nuts!

That's quite a jump for 4 year old! What a precious photo.:)
