Many of you know I volunteer at a rescue called T.I.E.R. Tier is housing Gizmo until he is ready to come home, which is any day now. In exchange for him staying there I have been helping her clean, groom and anything else she needs. My sister has donated some of her time to trim hooves and I have offered to help train a few of her adoptable horses.

Today, when visiting Gizmo and cleaning we discovered she is dangerously low on hay. She never asks for anything but casually mentioned she wasn't sure where she was gonna get the money to buy more. Yes, she has applied for grants but they are not instant.

I am asking my friends here if they can spread the world in hopes that enough kind and wonderful people with donate even $10 to help TIER get more hay.

They are non-profit (of course) and have many horses that need special care and attention that many people would not even bother with. TIER is quickly becoming very dear to me, the president has sacrificed everything to keep this place running. She works a full time job and never takes time for herself. Every thing is devoted to feeding and caring for the TIER residents.

I know this board has banded together for some many of our own. While TIER is not a board member, there is a bit of all of us here in her.

Thank you

If anyone has suggestions on fundraisers for TIER, Please suggest them. Like many rescues she is struggling to get by in this dropped economy and has gone without for herself and put her horses first.

I'd suggest she call write and otherwise try to get the attention of her local media... newspapers, radio, the local TV stations. See if they will come out and run a story. :)

I think local stations like this kind of story, and people like to help rescues that are nearby and local.

Yes, I agree. She could have a story run and have an "open house" day on the weekend inviting the public to come meet the horses and take a tour of the facility. Maybe some local businesses would even donate some prizes or services for a raffle, it is a good way for them to advertise to locals.

an open house is not possible.. and as for the local media... she does have contact at the local papers that are going to run stories. She just is sending out a mass mailing to everyone that has ever donated to them over the last 10yrs.

They just held a huge tack sale.. last month.. the last of the money raised there was used for her most recent shipment of hay. She works 6 days a week, at night, she only gets 4 hrs a sleep since she is up feeding and caring.

She doesn't know I am posting this. I want to help her as much as I can. I figured spending the word about her place couldn't hurt.

why isnt the open house a possibility?

How about a raffle done at a local feed store. Have her buy 2 bags of feed, a halter, or a bridle or something, and have the feed store raffle it off. Everyone wins.
I like raffles that have a pair of garden gloves, few cheap garden tools, knee pad, some seeds, and a little garden angel. Won one once, but they made a fortune off it.
Cost them maybe 10 bucks and they made 1 buck per entry, there were loads of entries. I loved it.

Open houses- are not easy undertakings. An open house literally opens you up to all kinds of potential liability. You also need an army of reliable horse savvy and people savvy volunteers. Been there, done that. It also take extra money, which when funds are tight it's not always an 'investment' that will guarentee returns. Open houses also require due diligence with insurance... again for general liability.

If you have a couple extra bucks that you can send TIER's way or to your local rescue- PLEASE do. Every little penny, nickel, dime, dollar counts...

ALSO: consider selling your old/used cell phones for $$. If you have cell phones and some accessories- you can mail them in for recycling and have the $$ sent to a non-profit. I can provide links. It's simple to do and will cost nothing but a few moments of your time.
