How would I go about this? I know it needs cleaned. It has never been done, no one has ever told me to do it. I want it done. I know it is dirty. Thanks ahead of time!

Well, get long gloves(I keep them on hand)a bucket of warm water, a tad bit of Ivory soap(I use Excalibar, needs super rinse, can get infected if not rinsed well enough). If your horse drops, cool, just start washing. Some people use a soft wash rag, I dont. You will need to get the bean, inside the tip of the penis. Hard to tell how, City is so easy, just open feel around, very gently, and your done. You may or may not get a bean, and the bean may be grey and soft or hard, either way, if your not comfortable with the bean part, have your vet do it when you have his teeth floated next time, he will show you how it is done.
I usually have to go in and ask City to drop, not all horses will, so you may have to clean from inside the sheath, and be very very through in your rinse.
good luck

The Sheath Cleaning Song
Author Unknown
Sing it to the tune of "Hello Mother, Hello Father" from camp song
How's it hangin'?
So much cleaner.
Aren't you glad I
washed your wiener?
I'll admit it's
kinda creepy
that I had to stick my arm up in your pee-pee.
It was sticky.
It was gunky.
It felt icky.
It smelled funky.
It was cruddy,
it was crusty--
when you stuck it out, it creaked like it was rusty.
After half an
hour of toilin'
and of squirtin'
baby oil in,
you're as fresh there
as a daisy.
The OTHER Sheath Cleaning Song
To the tune of "If you're happy and you know it"...
If it's hanging and you see it, lube your hands
If it's hanging and you see it, lube your hands
If it's hanging and you see it
Grab it quick, it's time to clean it,
If it's hanging and you see it, lube your hands.
If it's peely and it's crusty, pick it off
If it's peely and it's crusty, pick it off
If it's peely and it's crusty
and the smell is kind of musty,
If it's peely and it's crusty, pick it off
If his weenie has a beanie, dig it out
If his weenie has a beanie, dig it out
If his weener has a beaner
Pull it out and he'll be cleaner,
If his weenie has a beenie, dig it out
Now he's happy and you know it, wash your hands
Now he's happy and you know it, wash your hands
It's a job that's kind of kinky
And now your hands are really stinky,
But he's happy and you know it, wash your hands.

I'm definately not an expert on the subject but I've stumbled through it three times now and I finally have started to get the hang of it. lol...:innocent:
I like to use KY jelly because it doesn't have to be rinsed out, and it seems to do a better job then Excalibur, IMO. I get a bucket of warm water, shoulder length gloves because he will not drop for me:innocent: (although other then that he is very cooperative), and pull out the hose. (I only use the hose for rinsing off my gloves when I come back out of the black hole for more KY jelly.)
I can't really explain "how" I clean it.. I just went up and started blindly but gently pulling off all the nasty stuff, and kept doing that (using a TON of KY jelly) until I couldn't really get off anymore. I also had to go wayyyyy up to check for beans, but Kota was very good about it. Although if he would have just dropped it would have been so much easier.

<------ just read the song, lmao. :hysterical:
I have heard it before, but I don't sing it to Kota while we're 'cleaning'. He doesn't seem to see the humor in it or think that it's an appropriate subject for a musical. Go figure. :p

Those songs are hilarious!!! I am going to ask my friend if she has done it and may look into the vet doing it. I don't want to hurt him. You should have seen my mom's face when I told her I needed to clean it:D

where I board, the public can come & rent horses for guided trail rides. being pasture boarders, my friends & I have a tacking up shed/covered area up the hill away from the main barn. we were having a sheath cleaning discussion, I was demonstrating on my horse because he doesn't mind it & it needed done. as I finish up and look over to the main barn, I realize I had an audience of parents & children the whole time~:o

I use KY Jelly now. That is because Cane had a reaction to Excalibur last year and had a VERY SWOLLEN Ummm area. My vet recommened Ivory soap or KY Jelly. If you want to have fun go to Rite-Aid and ask for the largest tube of KY Jelly and where they keep their latex gloves....... I LOVE the expression on their face.

I don't clean my geldings' sheaths. I will occasionally get rid of the bean, if there is one, and wipe off his dangly when it's hanging in the breeze. That's it.

dangly.....hanging in the breeze.............you are too funny!
Dr. Blades McKnight, yes that is her real name, is the vet that floated Rum's teeth and she did his sheath. She recommends Ivory soap and big pieces of cotton. Soap it up real good and scrub with the cotton and rinse well. Easier said then done, right?
Laurel says Rum's sheath gets dirty overnight. I guess some horses are like that. Dr. Blades also said some horses don't get beans but you should still check.

OMG those songs were too funny! Now when I have to give Biggs his cleaning next time... I'll sing one of those songs. :p
This might be a very strange question but.. what is the bean? I've always known to get it out but never really knew what it was..
