Definitely check out the website Cheval posted....it is GREAT.
Also, bunnies need hay (timothy or grass hay is best), lots of water (of course you know that), good quality pellets... and they MUST stay out of the sun, they will die if they get too hot. What else....their teeth continuously grow so they need safe wood to chew on. And they have very fragile backs so it is best to not let little kids pick them up, bunnies backs can break easily, even from jumping out of someone's arms.....
What kind of bun are you getting? I have a black mini lop....he is my little love.
And, what color is your new bunny?
Hmmm.....names.....maybe once we see a picture of your new bun that will help.... for now the name Niblet popped into my head....lol.

Congratulations on getting a rabbit! I raise rabbits to show, and love my bunnies. I always wait to name my rabbits till I get to know their personalities. It's hard to name something if you don't know it, or at least what color it will be.
Is this going to be an inside or outside bunny? I can give you some good cage building recommendations depending on where your rabbit will live.
Here are a couple pictures of two of my rabbits when they were younger. The first one is Mokey, an American Fuzzy Lop and the second one is Uno, a Checkered Giant. Mokey weighs 3 pounds full grown and Uno weighs 13!!!
You can go to www.arba.net to see all the different breeds of rabbits and check out www.rabbitsonline.net for a forum for rabbit lovers that is just as nice as this horse forum!

Bunnies don't have to have buddies. I've heard that some bunnies don't even like being with others and will fight. If this is your first bun then I would concentrate on that one first. Then down the road I'd get another one and there is a lot of info out there on how to introduce them.
I had an indoor bunny for 7 years and if I had brought another bunny into the house she'd have killed me in my sleep!

Though some people do get lucky with bonded pairs of rabbits, both of them need to be spayed or neutered for it to have any chance of being successful past maturity. As long as you spend time with your bunny, he or she won't get lonely- they really aren't very social animals. I have seen rabbits injure each other very severely when people kept them together for friendship- even littermates or moms and kids will fight after they hit about 4 months old.
One thing you can do if you would like two rabbits is to rescue an already fixed and bonded pair from a good rabbit rescue!

Remali- Thanks!! Your ebony is a cutie, too :) I am a big fan of lops, they have such great personalities. I've raised fuzzy lops on and off for around 12 years.

I agree about getting two bunnies, they sometimes will fight....and of course would have to spayed or neutered (and if you do spay or neuter, read up on it at www.rabbit.org because some anesthesia can kill rabbits.......there is one that is more safe for rabbits, I think it is isoflurane, and some vets don't seem to know this, also some vets think a bunny needs to fast, not eat, before surgery, but I have heard that is not true and that you should not fast a bunny). If you keep your new bunny indoors, or somewhere near the house where you can play with him daily, he/she will be happy alone......they do best indoors of course, my bunny is so much like my dogs, he likes to lay next to my chair, and he is totally litter box trained. Of course I have to be very careful of wires and cords.

Welcome easter's witch! Everyone has given you great advice. Clarzoo your rabbits are gorgeous!
These are my girls Toby and Guinevere. Toby is about 7 or 8 years old and Guinevere is about 5 years old. They are both house rabbits and are spayed. Toby has decided that she wants to be a loner and they are no longer bonded.

The spaying is really hard on a buns. I did it and was on the floor sleeping next to Bunzilla! all night long keeping a water bottle warmed and next to her. She had a little bit of problem with slow recovery, but once that was over and the incision area healed she was back to ruling the apartment with an Iron Paw.

Mountain Creek, your loppies are gorgeous!!
When I had my rabbits inside, I kept them in C&C cages. These cages are cheap, customizable to your space, lightweight and easy to take apart and build. Here is a website about them, http://www.rabbitcondo.com/ or you can google them for lots of great ideas. This type of cage is not suitable for an outdoor cage unless it is on an enclosed patio and safe from any outdoor animals.

After Bitsy past away last year- we haven't gotten a new bunny. So it's been a long time since we have been without a bunny but anyway...
Fresh hay is very important. Not alfalfa though.
Fresh veggies but make sure you get a list of the safe veggies... no iceburg lettuce for example. Fruits are okay for a little treat.
A nice pellet that can fill in the gaps for nutritional requirements. The hay was always the primary source of food- which is why fresh hay is important because they pick out what they need.
The C&C cages are what I use too except for outdoor hutches. Indoor bunnies can be litter trained very easily. If you let them romp around make sure they are okay with cats, dogs, people and they will try and chew just about anything.

Ebony is a mini lop..... they are GREAT pets! I think they are a bit more laidback and mellow. Boys tend to be a bit more mellow than the girls, at least in general. I can't wait to see what you get! Ebony is about 6 pounds, so not big, but not real tiny either..... There are also Holland lops, they are a bit smaller than mini lops....altho I am not sure if they are as mellow....it probably all depends on the individual rabbit. Good luck!

Dutch's are a mid size breed, they can be a bit feisty. I had a mini dwarf rabbit a long time ago and it was very small and very sweet.
I'd say just go and look around at a variety of them and see which one interest you the most.
Bunzilla! picked me. I went window shopping in the pet store one day. No intention of getting a rabbit. I thought of actually getting a beta fish. I just wanted a house buddy.
So I'm walking around the little rabbit pen and this tiny little Dutch bunny sits up on her haunches and looks at me. As I walked, she twisted her head following me. Then I got down and just watched her and she just watched back. It was love at first sight. I went to the checkout lady and told her I wanted a bunny.
But when I got back I couldn't tell because they were all black and white Dutch's. So, I figured it wasn't meant to be until she hopped up on her haunches again and folded her little front legs up like she was pawing at me. The clerk even said, I think it's that one. I said, yep, that's the one!
And I spent every last bit of the money I had until payday on getting her. Ate Top Ramen for the next week and a half. It was the best investment other than Solon in my whole life.
Bunzilla! was with me for the next seven years and got me through some bad times in my life. She became a free roam buns almost immediately and ruled the apartment with an iron paw but when she knew I was sick or really sad. She would jump up on the couch and bump my hand with her nose and it always made me feel better.
I can't wait to hear what kind of bunny you get Easter!!!! You are going to have so much fun!
The first thing you should after you get one is make sure you have the number of a bunny savvy vet handy. It's better to have it before you need it. Not all small animal vets understand the workings of a bun-bun. So ask them specifically how many bunnies they work with. I had a super great vet. I took Bunzilla! in once a year for a general check up, but you wouldn't necessarily need to do that.
Bunny vets are extremely expensive because they consider them exotic pets. When I got Bunzilla! spayed it was over $300. When I got Solon gelded the first time it was only $110.

Remali, That pic is what Nblet looks likes only a lot smaller.. She has been eating celery and broccoli but she isn't eating her feed. She is eating the hay too. Do I need to be giving her anything else to eat? She loves to play in her water bowl and splash the water in her crate. She sit on top of the box and watches us too when we don't hold her. I want to take jer outside but the heat is just too bad right now. Niblet got really upset when I cleaned her cage this morning. She had to see everything I was doing and tried to climb in the bag of dirty bedding.
Remali
07-04-2009, 12:05 AM
That's good she's eating the hay, they do need hay to help aid with digestion, etc. I wonder if she isn't eating her pellets if they taste funny to her......hmmmm.....maybe try buying some more pellets and see if she will eat those? I buy Purina rabbit chow and my bun loves that brand. They like carrots and apples too.....but no lettuce, that can cause serious diarrhea in rabbits and that could make them very ill. Also, safe wood for her to chew on to keep her teeth trimmed (rabbit's teeth grow continuously so they need safe wood to chew on).
I bet she is adorable!
lisakaye
07-04-2009, 12:16 AM
I will try a different brand of pellets to see if she will eat those. I haven't tried apples yet. Do I need to core them or cut them in chunks and what about the skin? Do rabbits eat the skin too?

can you givr a bunny a bath?
Remali
07-04-2009, 09:47 AM
I usually cut apples up for my rabbit, I don't give him a whole lot because he mainly likes his pellets and hay.....
but start out with small amounts of fruit and veggies till she gets used to them.
This site is great for info...talks about food to avoid too...there are some food you should not feed and I can't remember... I always check out everything on here....
http://search.atomz.com/search/?sp_a=sp06282400&sp_f=iso-8859-1&sp_q=nutition
Baths are not usually recommended....bunnies stay amazingly clean, and clean themselves quite often..... You can brush your rabbit tho, and it is recommended that you do brush them. I can't wait to see pictures of your new bun!

we actaully we have two rabbits, one mini lop (niblet) and one mini loinhead (sirea, or her two nick names: chewy and chewbaca from the same person.the best part is (even though they are in the the same cage and are of the same gender) they get along beutifully!!!!!! they sleep together, they groom each other and they play together!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i will try to get some pics of their inclorser inside, it has been to hot to put up one out side (100-117) any if we didi have one up we wouldnt put the out side during the day, we do not want any dead rabbits. we also got some halters so we can take them out side in the mornig and evening when it isnt to hot for them. ummmmmmmmm, do any of you know ways to calm a bunny? niblet runs around th house for one and a half hours plus if you cant catch her and she olny comes when she gets tired. we give them premiom rabit food with half a stick of celery, 6 baby carrots and some times brcoilli (we need to get more). when we let them rum around inside, we put them in my room and shut the door. they mostly play under the bed.thats all for now!
