View Full Version : My Jack Russell is not feeling to hot

I need some advice:

My Jack Russell is feeling really under the weather. He threw up 6 times this morning and then was fine. At least that was what I thought. He went outside with my other two dogs and was fine; chasing cats and running around, and then sunning himself next to the bird bath. Get him inside tonight and he is really off; Droopy ears, sad eyes, tight belly, and almost falling over to lie down. He is not bouncing and not happy right now. The vet is closed so if I call him it is an emergency call and being a back county vet only available until 9. I can get him in first thing in the morning. Which, I will do if he does not improve by morning.

I just need some thoughts on what may be going on with him.

Well, the first guess is that he got into something he shouldn't have... that can be as benign as something rotten that makes him nauseous, to something dangerous like anti-freeze. I'd weigh those chances and possibilities carefully, because things like antifreeze or poisons... rat poison, etc, are fatal of you don't do something to treat them.

We (my dad and I) searched the areas of the property including his shop for just those things. We found nothing. The only thing we can find that is a maybe, is he could have gotten into the compost pile....could that be a culpret?

Oh I suppose there's plenty in a compost pile that might be attractive, and make a pup pretty sick... I know my beagle would try it.

But that probably wouldn't be dangerous, just unpleasant for everyone.

hmmmmm. He still tries to play, but still refuses food. He is drinking some water though. And he is sleeping a lot right now.

My poor little boy, he is having a really unpleasant time right now.

Has he tried to potty? I spose the other risk is that he ate something that will plug him up. Look for signs he's constipated.

Socks... rawhide bones, plastic bags..etc...

Thanks Zoel, me too.

WB I do not know if he has pooped, today. That is a fear I have because I have not seen him do his buisness yet.

I hope he's ok. It sounds like he got into something and his system is trying to get rid of it. If he's not eating in the morning I would definitely call the vet and see if you can get him in there. It's a good sign that he wants water though. At least he won't be dehydrated. His tummy is probably still sore.

Been up since 3 am with my little guy. (now 5) just waiting on the vet to open in 2 more hours. He vomited again last night the count is up to 8 times in 24 hours. He has stopped trying to play, has not pooped has urinated, though he had trouble lifting his leg. His tummy is sore. And since we have been up he has not had any water...

I am trying to keep it together, this little guy is my hubby's pal. Hubby won't be here until late tomorrow...I'm starting to freak....

Took a chance and called the vet mainly just to double check the hours. The vet answered. Tock has an appointment at 7:15.

This is so scary. Lasy year one of my dogs didn't look right either. Took her in @ 2 AM, total liver failure. 3 days & $3000 later I had a dead dog. They think she ate poison wild mushrooms but we'll never really know.
I'm glad he's getting checked out & hoping for the best.

me too. I am sorry natisha that that happened to your pup. How heart braking. Tock is a little fighter but he just isn't himself. I am preying it is nothing serious.

Poor little guy!

Hopefully, it's just a blockage of some sort that can be taken care of. The fact that he hasn't pooped would lead me to think something like that.

Sending good vibes!

Let us know what the vet says.

**Update**

Well our little buddy is still at the vets. The doc wanted to keep him today for observation and to put some Iv fluids in him.

Doc seems to be in concencess that it is some sort of food poisoning, but not a poison. At least that is good. I will post another update too once I get him home.

Aw geeze... hope the little guy perks up in the vet's care.

Whew, glad to hear it is something managable. It does seem like the compost pile is the culprit if food is put out there.
Thanks for your condolence on my Sazzy Pants ( the dog)

Appy, I'm hopeing everything is ok. It sounds like his body has been trying to purge whatever he got into. Hopefully it's out of his system and all he needs is the fluids. Let us know as soon as you hear anything.

Thanks everyone for your well wishes.

****UPDATE****

Tock is fine!!!!!!!!

Doc said Tock just had an infection. Not sure what kind. His white count was high. The doc gave him an antibiotic shot and put him on Iv fluids, and sent us home with amoxicillin. He is napping, but when we got home he was trying to play and his eyes where nice and bright.

This office was extremely packed when I got there so I did not get the chance to talk to the doc but I did get everything copies and doc wrote down food poisoning. My poor little guy.

I keep talking like he is a puppy, but Tock is our “old” man out of our three dogs. He is going on 11 years old. My hubby has had him since he was 5 months old. I am so relieved this turned out good in the end.

As a side note I did find holes dug in the compost pile…no clue what he found, but there was evidence of digging. If anyone out there composts as well watch your dogs. My poor pup learned the hard way that just because it smells “good” doesn’t mean it “feels” good.

Anyone want to make bets on whether he learned anything?

My bet is, whatever it was... he'd eat it again. ;) If he's anything like our beagle.

All the best to you, his caretaker who must try to prevent and deal with such outcomes. :)

Yea, I'm with you on this. But on the other hand, they only have about a week to worry about it.

put me down for 10 he will do it again....the rotten little dog. lol He keeps trying to run down into the field now, every time I let him out. But at least he is back to normal for now. We leave in a week so only a few days of keeping him on a tight watch.
