Well, I have decided it's time for me to make another run at winning another national powerlifting championship, so I'm back in training. Now that I am over 50, I am in the Masters catagory, and if I can get my kness to hold together for a year, I think I have a pretty good shot. I've got about 20lbs to lose, but that son't be too hard for me, and we'll have to see how my knees feel when I get my squats back over 400lbs.

I'm psyched !

Squats over 400!!! Holly Molly!!! I'm proud of myself for being able to lift a 50 pound bag of dog food out of my trunk and into the house, let alone 8 times that all at once!! I can't lift for a few days after I unload 6-50lb bags of cubes out of the truck and walk them over and up the step to the tack room. lol But, I do remember when I couldn't lift or walk with a bag at all because I didn't have the strength in my arms, back or my legs, I'm much stronger now. I have to remember to lift with my legs because I found out the hard way just how bad it hurts the next day to not lift properly. That's only 50lbs, I can't imagine what all can go wrong if you lift 400lb wrong!!

I'm cheering you on Steve!! Your a big guy and when you set your mind to something your on a mission. I hope your knees can take it, don't push too hard too fast. I'm sure you know what you can handle and how hard to push, your a professional lifter. I on the other hand am a professional at 50lb bags and that's about it, that's all I can handle. lol

Good luck, keep us updated with your progress:)

Good luck man. That is a great goal. That powerlifting can really wreak havoc on the joints. Why I quit going super heavy some years back. The elbows, knees and lower back were telling me they weren't appreciating it, haha, and then I tore my labrum in my shoulder benching, and that was it for the super heavy low rep work for me. You know your body and you will know when you can push and when you need to back off. Keep us updated on your progress. Would love to see where you start in your lifts and what you get to.

Good luck! I hope your body responds well. I have a good friend that used to power lift and now he wishes he never had. He has too many aches and pains related to the lifting days. I haven't lifted seriously for quite some time. My knees tell me every time I walk down a steep hill that there will be no more 400 pound squats for me.

What are your goals for weights in the lifts that you think you'll need to win a nat'l championship?

My goal for the national meet will be 512 squat, 331lb bench, 551lb deadlift...should do the trick!

Do you have to do special exercises to get your knees conditioned? Can you share them if you are?

Best of luck, you know we'll all be rooting you onward to VICTORY!

Well, for me, since I had PCL (Posterior Cruciate Ligament) reconstruction, I have to do hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of leg extensions, to build up my thigh muscles, to help over-compensate for the weak PCL connection. I am blessed with naturally HUGE hamstrings and glutes (butt muscles), so just doing the squats keep those in tune.

OH Gosh Steve! I wish you luck, but I am also biting my fingernails.

I guess as I get older I am a worry wart. You are a great farrier and I would hate to see something go wrong that might hinder your job.

OK, the "mom" side of me will stop... ;) Good luck but BE CAREFUL!!! And yes, we want pictures.. :D

Don't worry......my ego is not so big that I would not be able to say...."I can't do this". But thanks for worrying :)

BTW - I am INCREDIBLY sore today....... I was doing 400lb leg presses.....felt pretty good...until today :D

I did a few squats with the bar.....my hip clicked on every one:rolleyes: That'll go away when I get up over 300lbs or so.

I was only able to bench 135 for reps of 10.......it hurt !!!!!

We haven't been able to see good butt pictures, but you should get some so we can let you know about that.

My issues are ACL related. I think what they used to reconnect has stretched on my 'good' knee and my old good knee has a tear now that I'll be seeing the surgeon about again soon.

What do you mean by leg extensions? Do you have to have equipment for that? Or can you do something just at home? I've been trying to find stuff online for knees and not really finding anything. I'm leary of doing squats with the bad condition they are both in.

It's ghastly !!!!! LOL:eek:

See, you want to be working your hamstrings hard,. Your ACL keeps your femur from sliding FORWARD on the tibial plateau, and the hamstring will work to help keep it(femur) pulled back.

What do you mean by leg extensions?
Check out this Wikipedia page...it shows pictures....

I think the hardest part about going back to lifting is what you mentioned in the last line. Getting sore from your old warm up weight. THe good thing is that it usually comes back faster than if you were just starting out. Best of luck! Do you have any links to the competitions you'll be shooting for or your competitiors?

Thanks for the link. Interesting about the hamstring, I wouldn't have guessed but that makes sense.
