I ran out of bunny food yesterday and didn't have time to stop and pick up more so I wound up feeding them a little bit of pelleted horse feed to tide them over. It didn't kill 'em as I didn't THINK it would but here's the thing. When I gave it to them they seems to like it more than they did the rabbit food! So I'm wondering if they like it and I continue to feed it to them would there be any harm in it? I also give them greens and calf manna (when their nursing) from time to time so they sorta have a balanced diet. We currently raise these rabbits for sale and have several of them.

Hay. Hay is great for all bunnies! In fact, rabbits and bunnies NEED hay. I would feed that, and once you get pellets they still need hay. Not so sure about calf manna tho....what is in it??? And, what kind of greens? Veggies are good, but lettuce can kill a rabbit (diarrhea).

Grains and seeds are not very good for rabbits, so I would not feed horse feed. Too much sugar too (molasses).

Thanks Remali!

The horse feed I fed last nite is the pellet kind, I don't think there's any molasses in it at all. As for veggies, I stay away from lettuce but they get some parsley, carrots, chard, things like that from time to time. I have a small veggie garden and I'll give them the tops or whatever out of it sometimes, they love it! lol in the winter they'll get some mustard and turnip leaves as well. I do feed them hay too.

mena, what is it exactly that you raise rabbits for?:headscratch:
I saw some really pretty "lion head" rabbits at a barn that I visited. They were eating what appeared to be pellets..don't know what kind.

Hmmm, Paslr.... we WERE raisin them to eat but not so much now. We sell them as pets now. If you can get you hands on a boy/girl pair of those there lion heads that would just be the bee's knee's. ;) For ME of course! lol

And yea rabbit food comes in a pellet form so that is probably what they are feeding them and I did some research online awhile back about what kinds of veggie foods I should and should not feed them since we grow so much and can feed them the 'throw away'.

If I ever run out of food and don't have time to pick any up (does not happen often) I just load their litter boxes with timothy hay. Hay is a MUST in a rabbit's diet.
