Seems like last year there was a LOT of discussion about hay prices and the lack of hay. This year I called my supplier from last year and he has no hay to sell right now. My neighbor just cut and baled the grass in Bob's hunting section...its an acre of grass adjacent to the horse pasture. We will have about 50 bales. First cutting, its really thick.

My wonderful neighbor is charging $20 an acre to cut/bale plus 50 cents a bale. Comes out to about $1 a bale. The kicker is - he tells me its the going rate?? Yet the hay supplier charges $4 a bale plus delivery. We are getting the remainder of our hay from a neighbor that has a vacant "horse" pasture, the grass there is as nice as what we own - same price, $1 a bale. This pasture is pretty large, they once had horses on it maybe 2 years ago. Plus a second cutting of our ground later on.

What is the going price to have someone cut and bale hay in your area? I'd really like to know, I cannot beleive I am getting it for $1 a bale.

We don't normally pay per bale when we've had our pastures baled. We always work it out on halves. Usually ours is round bales which go for 25-35 each, when we pay for ours to be baled, we take half and then pay like 10/round, the person who cut and baled it gets to keep the other half of the hay for themselves.

when I had rounds last year they cost me $20 a bale and I kept them all...

I am waiting on our hay guy to get to us this year... with the rain like it has been fields are slow to be cut can't get enough clear days... Ihave about 7 acres and should get about 300 bales I HOPE anyway ... then hopefully I will get a second cutting before late OCt

when we do squares our average (including paying two boys to help put it up) is about $1.50 going rate for them around here is $2.50 and UP

I'm paying $3/square bale for mine...that is delivered and stacked in my haymow. But my hay guy has also dropped off 2 rounds free of charge this week for me as well as we can't quite get his wagon loaded down with 200 bales into my field due to some minor flooding we had last week coupled with the natural spring that runs down into our property.

He does not have any livestock - and told us he has no place to store it if he was going to sell it. So far I've only gotten 27 bales, the rest is on a rack under a tarp and some in the field yet, he is raking it twice. I unloaded and stacked all 27 myself but we only have 2 horses, no need to hire help for that. It was super cool last night which is when we did it and not too bad today.

We've had so much rain the farmers can't get the hay baled. It rained almost every day in June, May too. We normally pay $3.00 a bale for really good hay. I sure hope it drys up so they can get things done. The grass is thick and nice but nobody can get haying done.

Yup got 205 bales so far with another 50-60 coming in tomorrow. Really nice stuff!!
I'm paying $6.50 off the field and I store it here at my barn. Yes the yields are down do to low rain so there isn't as much available.

Everyone here is scrambling. We usually pay 3.50 for really nice hay, now we are paying 5.75 for crappy hay

Same situation as Peggy Sue here. Rain, and not being able to really start cutting until now.

I get my hay from my long time farrier. Costs me 2.50 to 3.00 a bale, delivered. I have to stack it in the hayshed myself, though.

Hopefully, I'll get mine soon- I'm almost out. My farrier does have half a wagonload of hay left from last year, and told me if I got too low to let him know. He won't let Gypsy run out of hay. I'd just rather be able to start fresh with new stuff, lol!

Most of it around here from what I've seen is $3.00-$4.00 a square bale for Fescue or Fescue Mix and the other is 4x4 or 4x5 Fescue Round Bales that are anywheres from $25.00 - $30.00 mostly.

We were late here too with lots of rain. Just got our 100 large square bales (over 500lb. each) into the hay shed. I think my inlaws worked it out to about $25-$30 a bale. Which is about the same as last year. We are also waiting for our neighbor to get over and cut the stuff the big hay guys can't get to with their big tractors, which should equal out to about another 200 small squares, which i think will be all of ours, we'll just pay for our neighbors fuel.

i can't imagine paying 6.50 a bale. what size bale is that? how much does it weigh?

I lease out 17 acres to my hay guy for $60 each. I then buy from him.
We did first cutting a few weeks ago & second is coming in nicely. We get 3 cuttings, sometimes though rarely 4. They are small squares (why do they call them squares when they are rectangular?) well over 50#.
I think I paid $2.50 @, that includes putting it up. I also spent $25 in gatorade for the workers & I give a $10 tip to the poor souls who put the hay in the hay barn.

I called 3 hays guys today--my main and 2 backups and no one has any hay--good news is that they don't expect any rain for about a week so they are cutting today so I should be able to get some by Monday. I have a friend who owes me so I will have enough to make it until without buying from the high priced evil feed store.
